When Jesus talked to Nicodemus about being "born again", Jesus was surprised Nicodemus did not understand what He meant. Does this not imply that Jesus spoke of a previously accepted and known concept expressed in the Scriptures (what we now call the Old Testament)?

As for the Book of Life, one of the Fall Feasts - I forget which one - celebrates the opening of the book. The principle about a name being written in and blotted out is a concept that comes from this feast. So, to understand what Jesus meant by this, one ought to study the element of the Feast this alludes to, don't you think?

If I don't know what it is, I can't study it. Does that make sense?

Yes, and I apologize for tha. But unfortunately I did not have the time to search the resources to explain these things this morning, and I still don't have the time (work break). I'm hoping someone more versed in such things can chime in. If not, I'll fill in the blanks later when I can.

Thanks.

Worthy News Brief - September 6, 2013

We're in the midst of Awesome Days!

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Between Rosh HaShannah and Yom Kippur are ten days. These days are known as "Yamim Noraim", "the Days of Awe" -- or also translated, the "Awesome days". In Judaism it has been long believed that these days seal your fate for the upcoming year -- and also allude to your final destiny, concerning whether your name continues to be written in the Book of Life. Throughout the ages, Jewish people spend the Days of Awe in great reverence -- aware of the holiness and judgment of YHVH; so repentance, reconciliation, forgiveness and a general heightening of moral conduct are emphasized. After the holiday, for many, it's back to life as usual.

But we ought to realize...there are nine verses in the Bible, Old and New Testament, which clearly state that we will be judged and rewarded for our works. (The final one is Revelation 22:12). Salvation is by grace through faith; and all who believe have their names written in the Book of Life.[Eph 2:5], but our rewards will be determined solely by what we have done. One day, when this life is over, we will all stand before the judgment seat of Messiah (Christ). Once we breathe our last breath we will never again be able to prepare for eternity! These are our days of awe; not just once a year, but every single day of our life. Our everyday deeds on earth will determine our destinies in eternity.

Salvation is the deliverance from danger or suffereing. To save is to deliver or protect. The word "Salvation" concerns an eternal, spiritual deliverance.

The phrase "born again" literally means "born from above".Trusting in Jesus Christ, the One who paid the penalty of sin when He died on the cross. When one is saved,he/she has been born again.

Dearest nebula,

That was "awesome",no pun intended....truly beautifully said, thank you for sharing....When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about being "born again",clearly he did not understand what the Lord meant-even as the Jews knew the Scriptures so well and understood that a Messiah would come to "save''them it always struck me how difficult it must have been for them to comprehend because Jesus was still with them physically,His Blood was not yet shed...

For us we know what the Messiah has already done to "save"us and in Him we die to ourselves that we become "born again" through His resurrection....can you imagine trying to understand all of this as you are speaking to the One,standing right in front of you....they thought He would live and rule with them forever, imagine what it must have done to their faith as He was hanging on that cross......My Lord Jesus, thank you that we have been 'born again" by You,thank You for You are our Lord and Savior!Halleluliah!     Oh but for the Grace of God......Love,Kwik

The principle about a name being written in and blotted out is a concept that comes from this feast. The book of life is opened on Rosh Hashanah, and all names are written which have lived well the previous year. The days of Awe are a time when those who are still in question, (weighed in the balance) do good deeds. The book is completed and closed on Yom Kippur.

During the days of Awe, one of the primary actions is to go and ask forgiveness of anyone you have wronged. And of course, if you are asked forgiveness you are to forgive. If a person is weighed in the balance, this asking and forgiving are good deeds which might sway the balance so that your name is written. I believe that is what Jesus was talking about when He said, Mat 6 '12 For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 13  But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Forgiving is important in the New Covenant, it is not the unforgivable sin, so this statement which is made to a Jewish audience who were obligated to the Mosaic covenant at the time it was made, I believe is in the context of Judaism. However, the very basic premise of Jesus death was that He was offering forgiveness to those who had sinned against Him and who had not yet repented of their sin against Jesus so forgiving those who sin against us, is probably one of the more 'Christlike' things we can do. So we are to forgive those who trespass against us, but in the New Covenant, a failure to forgive does not result in the lack of forgiveness and a loss of salvation.

Salvation

  • Eternal Life
  • Saved
  • Born Again
  • Born from Above

  • Sons (and daughters) of God
  • Children of God

Once you are truly saved you cannot lose your salvation

Cannot be taken away:

John 10:27-29 (KJV)
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

Cannot sin your way out:

1 Corinthians 5:5 (KJV)
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Cannot / will not walk away:

Jeremiah 32:40 (KJV)
40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

1 John 2:19 (KJV)
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

Now here's how to be sure you are saved:

John 3:16-18 (KJV)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Ephesians 2:8-10 (KJV)
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

And your desire should be how close you can get to your Savior rather than how close you can get to sin (how much you can get away with that sort of thing). And when you do sin you are most miserable till you confess it to God (1 John 1:5-10 and 1 John 2:1-6 with particular note to 1 John 2:1a).

And you want to study his word and learn all you can about him from the Bible... not an essential but a clue / fruit of your salvation.

John 5:39-40 (KJV)
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
