Sporting events on Sunday

What is your views of Sporting events taking place on a Sunday? Today Northern Ireland played their first ever home game on a Sunday after many years of trying to avoid scheduling home fixtures on a Sunday. However UEFA used a computer system to schedule the fixtures. Anyhow there was protests from Christians outside the ground as the game was played (Northern Ireland 2 Finland 1 for anyone interested in the result). 

I personally am slightly disappointed that the tradition of not playing on a Sunday as it was in honor of Christians.That said, I also follow English and Scottish leagues, both have games on Sunday every week. I also follow American sports which is often played in a Sunday. I tend to think of Romans 14:5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. when this argument is raised. 

 

The interesting thing is the one of the main protester is on my facebook friends list and is a keen Liverpool supporter and sometimes comments on Liverpool games on a Sunday.

Well seeings how I don't consider Sunday to be the Sabbath, and I try to have a holy life and not just one day, I personally don't have a problem with sports on Sunday.....    well any more than any other day of the week.    I think we put too much into sports though, and some take it to levels of idol worship it seems.

Since the first day of the week in indeed "the Lord's Day" according to Scripture, and has been held as sacred by most western countries until very recently (some even having a law regarding the Lord's Day) sporting events on Sundays are indeed an insult to Christians.  The secular world does not care one way or another, but the Lord's Day must remain the Lord's Day. 

 

Sabbatarians disregard the Lord's Day also, presuming that they are honoring the Lord is doing so.  But Christ declared that He is the Lord of the sabbath, which meant that He had every right to institute the Lord's Day for Christian worship.  It was on the first day of the week that Christians met for worship in the New Testament, to remember both the sacrifice of Christ as well as His glorious resurrection.  The Day of Pentecost was also on the first day of the week.

That is a given.  But it is the gathering together on a particular day that is the focus here, as it is in Scripture (Acts 20:7).

I can't imagine Sundays without sports on TV.   It' a part of our culture and I can't see it going away and I don't want to see it go away.
