'LOL' is used as an expression as far as I'm concerned.  Mainly because the person behind the other monitor can't see you (usually).  I personally don't use the term but that's just because I don't want to.  IMO, it's not lying to use it though.

Well, if I am lol hard with tears streaming down my face so I can't see to type, it is counted as ROLF.   So now you all know.
