1Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”a for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’b or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

What is the significance of this part of that verse? "God's dwelling place is among the people and he will dwell with them."

What does this really mean? Thanks,

Spock

Spock,

Not sure which Bible version you have quoted, but let's focus on the KJV since there are some alterations and omissions in your quotation, and most of those changes were unnecessary, and some are actually alterations to the text (Rev 21:1-5):

1 And [changed] I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were [changed] passed away; and there was no more sea. [changed]

2 And I John [changed] saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, [changed] prepared as a bride adorned [changed] for her husband.

3 And I heard a great [changed] voice out of heaven [changed] saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, [changed] and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall [changed] be with them, and be their God.

4 And God shall [changed] wipe away all tears [changed] from their eyes; and there shall [changed] be no more death, neither  sorrow, [changed] nor crying, neither shall there be any more [changed] pain: for the former [changed] things are [changed] passed away.

5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

So your question pertains to Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men.  If you recall, God created man in His own image and in His own likeness so that man could have fellowship with God. Sin destroyed that fellowship but Christ has restored it back to those who are children of God (1 Jn 1:3-10).  God has always desired to dwell among men, therefore He gave Moses a detailed blueprint for a Tabernacle (or Tent) of Meeting, which eventually became the Temple in Jerusalem. So when Rev. 21:3 says “Behold, the Tabernacle of God is with men” it means that once the New Heaven and the New Earth come into existence, God will have an eternal dwelling place on earth, which will actually be the Temple in Jerusalem (as described in Ezekiel).  All the nations of the earth will come to Jerusalem to worship (Zech 14:16), and the earth itself shall be free from sin, sickness, sorrow, death, and pain.

After the 1000 years, the second and final judgement will take place.  Lucifer and all the goats will be thrown into the lake of fire, and the sheep will be spared.  Death and hell will also be thrown into the lake of fire.  So what we have left is no more evil and whoever is left in that 2nd resurrection (sheep) will be turned to spirit.  Now God will melt the heavens and the earth, because everything has been contaminated.  Satan contaminated heaven. The stars, sun, moon and planets also contaminated because men have worshiped them, and the earth is contaminated.  Everything will be melted and made new.

This is the Holy City New Jerusalem.  It's the true City of Peace, God's kingdom, and it's heavenly, not earthly.  All the saints are there now.

What gives it away is that there will be no more death.  Death still happens during the millennium, so this is AFTER the thousand years.

What we have been given is a vision of everything FINISHED.  All that Christ cleaned up is presented to God adorned "as a bride".  We have all the saints together now as one.  All the saints from the FIRST RESURRECTION together with the saints in the SECOND RESURRECTION. This is the finale.  It will be extravagant.

1 Corinthians 15:28   And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

This you may not understand.  The Word of God goes back inside the Father, for his job is finished in converting all men and presenting them to the Father.  The cleanup has finished.  Now beyond this point, we don't know what happens, for it is not revealed.

So Christ, The Word of God, our mediator between man and God, has brought us all to God, and God will himself dwell with man who has been changed to spirit.  In other words, God sent HIS WORD to change man.  We came to God through HIS WORD.  We did that, now we have God himself, in full, not just his Word, and all will be one in God.

Does this make sense?

The Greek word for “tabernacle” is “skeenee” (using my transliteration scheme), spelled “sigma-kappa-eta-nu-eta,” pronounced “skay-NAY,” and means a TENT (as you’ve already noted)! It’s the same word that was used for Avraham’s, Yitschaq’s, and Ya`aqov's home in Hebrews 11:9. They were nomadic, Bedouin tents! It’s not GOD’S dwelling place, per se, as much as it’s God’s CHILDREN’S dwelling place! But, God’s focus will be on His people existing on the New Earth and in His New Jerusalem.

Since that verse says "He will dwell WITH them" and not "He will dwell IN them" you are obviously trying to contradict Scripture and introduce your own ideas. This verse in not speaking about God dwelling within His children, but God having His dwelling place -- His tabernacle -- WITH MEN.  So please go to the book of Ezekiel (as already indicated) and see what that means.

Hi Spock,

As to the meaning of your scripture -

`Behold the tabernacle of God is with men...` (Rev. 21: 3)

my thoughts are that God desires all realms come under the Lordship of Christ & this is one aspect of that. For here we see that God has made a city, a community of people through whom the righteous rulership of Christ will function. All God`s purposes dove tail together when we realise that He made all authority realms & all rulership to be in those realms. The `dwelling` means that God who is a Spirit is now through Christ able to function through righteous men & women in every area of His great kingdom.

This will happen when all is finished and done after the 2nd judgement when all the saints from the first resurrection and 2nd resurrection are united together as one.  God will melt the heavens and the earth, and create a new one.

Then we will not only hear God's voice through "his Word", but we will be able to see God and hear his voice directly, for he himself will dwell with us.  We will be spirit then, just like God.

(Of course those of the first resurrection will see God, but after the 2nd resurrection, all are united together, and the 2nd lot who come in join the first lot, so the whole body will be together as one)

Seriously, bro’? S'way to go, Tumbleweeds!

I’m not trying "to contradict Scripture"; I’m trying to see Scriptures IN AGREEMENT! He SHALL INDEED "dwell WITH them,” and not just “IN” them!” But, what does that mean for a God who is OMNIPRESENT, as Marilyn’s quoted Scriptures prove?! He’s not going to be localized on the Earth any more than He is today localized to some mythical place called “Heaven!” I believe that it means that there shall be nothing to separate us from God! Nothing shall stand in the way for God to associate with mankind because all things that USED to alienate us from God shall be taken out of the way! No more sin; no more lies and deception; no more evil; no more death; no more dying; no more decay; no more pain! The former things shall have PASSED AWAY!

Another thing that shall have passed away is the Temple/Tabernacle in (or outside of) old Jerusalem. I see EVERYTHING being destroyed on the face of the earth by the Fire! And thus, I believe that the NEW Jerusalem will be TAKING THE PLACE OF the old Jerusalem; otherwise, why call it the new “Jerusalem?” Why not call the new city some other name? Yeshua` shall reign from old Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) during the Millennium; however, after the Fire, He shall be reigning from the New! Indeed, during the Millennium, the old city shall be called by a different name: "Yahuwh-shaamaah” - “The LORD is there!” (Ezek. 48:35) (It’s a Hebrew play on words.)

We are told plainly in Revelation 21:22...

Revelation 21:22
22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
KJV

There’ll be no more need for a “buffer,” like a Temple or a Tabernacle, between God and human beings.

Don’t forget the messenger’s words to Miryam (the angel’s words to Mary),

Luke 1:30-33
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
KJV

Hi Sister,

A couple of questions -

1. Why did God make different groups if they are all destined to be in the one place?

2. Since Jesus has a glorified body I believe we will also. Our spirit needs a `house` as the Apostle Paul says. So what do you think of this scripture -

`For we know that if our earthly house, this tent is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked.....` (2 Cor. 5: 1 - 3)

Hi Sister,

A couple of questions -

Hi Marilyn

The first and second resurrection are 1000 years apart.  There are so many who are yet to be born.  It's according to God's plan and his timing.

Marilyn.

I like this version better, sorry;

2 Corinthians 5:1   For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 Corinthians 5:2   For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
2 Corinthians 5:3   If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.

(1) The earthly house spoken of here is the building where the believers congregate.  That's where they are supposed to be taught.  We can call it a church building. But God is saying, don't worry about that building, we have another building not made with hands, so it must be a spiritual building.

(2) This house from heaven is God's house - his kingdom.  His kingdom is righteousness, truth, holiness, we desire this covering. We groan (yearn) for it.

(3) We are groaning for it because we don't want to be found naked (at Christ's return).  We don't want to be without truth.

God's house/kingdom gives us truth.  This is where it really comes from.  The Words he speaks to us is spirit.  If our church building becomes dissolved one day, eg this will happen when the False Prophet comes, then don't worry, there's another building where we belong to, that one in heaven, that same one that has covered us in the spirit and not in the material.

I'm not sure where this is going, because Rev 21:3  is the finale.  Not the first resurrection, but after the 2nd when all the saints are united together, and death and hell are no more.  A wonderful celebration. No more evil existing. A new heaven and earth about to be created for us, for all corruption is melted, gone, all the saints purified, now the heavens and the earth are next.

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
