The pastor at my church is now 61. He has steadily gained weight over the years, starting with a DadBod and he is now at the point where you could not describe him as anything but obese. He is clearly in bad shape. I can recognize that he works hard putting sermons together but his weight has gotten so out of hand it is clearly endangering his health and maybe his life.

Oddly, he talks frequently about going on long walks and hikes and how that helps to clear his mind and even serve to provide inspiration. He says he does this several times a week yet he is probably around 100 pounds overweight. My guess is that he is somewhere around 5'8" and well over 250 pounds.

He has admonished members of the congregation for over-indulging in pornography and media in general, but it's altogether obvious he over-indulges in food, to a gross degree. I almost am starting to find his appearance comical. He's taking on the appearance of one of those circus clowns with huge shoes and pants the size of a tent. Sometimes, he becomes very animated, striding across the stage back and forth, and he becomes short of breath and beads of sweat start to form on his forehead and above his mouth.

I feel badly for him, but I'm also starting to lose some degree of respect for him. Is he a sinner in this regard?

He is no doubt a sinner in some regard, just as you and I are. He might be a glutton. He probably has more than just that one sin, I bet you do also. Whether he is a glutton or not, if he is overweight, he probably in not a good steward of the Ts that God put him in charge of.

Time
Talents
Treasure
and the temple (the body)

Yes, gluttony is a sin, and we should all be good examples. Do you confess your sins to others, or just point out the sins of others?

Some medications trigger obesity. Nothing anyone can do about it.

Perhaps you should look at yourself and your sins first.

Hi Copenhagen,

If it is not medical reasons then it is a spirit of gluttony. And be careful for if that person is supposed to be your `overseer,` `shepherd` then he is making entrance for spirits to come on the people who receive him.

Yes we all sin, however we confess and move on. This man has seemingly not confessed but thinks gluttony is ok. It is not, it is a `spirit,` an unclean spirit. And that needs serious repentance and confession.

So don`t laugh for spirits love us to laugh at their evil work for it makes light of it. Pray earnestly for that man that conviction would come to him and release.

It's to a point where it's almost certainly affecting his work. Even just a year ago, he seemed to be more clear of mind, with his sermons focused and interesting. Over the past year, the quality of his work has clearly declined. He rambles more, his sermons are often confusing or they are just plain dull. He is also complaining more and more about how difficult life is as a pastor.

He is gradually losing his talents and the pews are starting to empty. This past weekend the church was as empty as I've ever seen it and I've been attending for 8+ years. He's not quite at the "Elvis has just left the building stage," but he's getting there. There is no way his staff and nearly as unlikely that his colleagues will call him out. It's really becoming laughable. I don't want to laugh at him, but I just can't help it. His weight problem has careened out of control.

He loves Italian food, all kinds. I think the mediterranean program or whatever it's called is supposed to be very healthy. I'm afraid he's adopted the unhealthy version very high in carbs most likely and heavy on the portions, too. He has mentioned that the church has always struggled with it's finances. Now with the pews more empty than ever, his stress is likely going to increase as well.

There's only one way out of this for him and that is to stop sinning. I wonder if he can do it?

I guess that is a good lesson in not judging others hypocritically.

Over drinking of water can create obesity too. Some people drink too much water at night.

No. He is 61 is all.  Bodies change over the decades granted life in them.

Why I too am 5- 8, over 250 lbs., and have worked hard long hours much  of it on rooftops until I was 74. I walk some, more so when in the mountains up and down the woods. I have spent decades of time kayaking and flying a Hobie cat, but have had to stop due to just wearing out my shoulder joints.

I also remarried three years ago. At that time I was walking five miles a day every day.

Other than because of  serious illness, there's no way  am I going to return to my 128 lbs of sinew and bone in my size 35 business suit that I was when I was 20 years old, running and lifting weights six out of seven days a week.

Ha,  the silly movie Shallow Hal just came to mind, wonder why?

ps- the predisone/cortizone shots down my spine and through my shoulders perhaps do have an affect on weight gain and retention. But they are necessary for me to be able to function too. It might be a trade off, one I live with happily.

pps- Perhaps without the meds I could have made a good looking thinner 185 lb corpse at age 47 - who knows.

One of the most respected of pastors even to this day is the man called the prince of Pastors Rev. Charles Hadden Spurgeon. He suffered all sorts of ailments, depression,  was stocky  with weight and died reatively young. Yet he is read to today by many hundreds of thousands. His messages speak  the Bible in a mighty way.

From  1 Corinthians: ..."consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;  God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,  so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,  so that, as it is written, 'Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.' "
