Revelation 1:10 - "The Lord's Day".  What is this scripturally?

Rev 1:10  I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,

I have heard many things in regards this text and the phrase in question, yet most that I have heard, refer to writings that come hundreds of years later, and those with mere guessing, without referring back to the scripture itself.  So, exclusive of material written after the fact by orders of many years, what does the scripture itself teach on this subject?

Immediate Context:

Rev 1:1  The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:
Rev 1:2  Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.
Rev 1:3  Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
Rev 1:4  John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
Rev 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Rev 1:6  And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Rev 1:7  Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
Rev 1:8  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Rev 1:9  I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Rev 1:10  I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
Rev 1:11  Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
Rev 1:12  And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
Rev 1:13  And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
Rev 1:14  His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
Rev 1:15  And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
Rev 1:16  And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

Imho its the Day that God choosed to reveal the Apocalypse in the great tribulation for all mankind to know !

I concur with the following commentary:

  Verse 10: “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day.”
  Some hold that this means the Christian Sabbath, or the first day of the week. The more accurate translation here is “the Day of the Lord.”
    1.      The Christian Sabbath was not called the “Lord’s Day” generally until after the Book of Revelation was written.
    2.      In the Gospels and Epistles the Christian Sabbath is called, “the First Day of the Week.”
    3.      It is difficult to conceive that John could have seen and done as much as the Book of Revelation records in only one Sabbath day.
    4.      The Old and New Testaments speak of the “day of the Lord” in connection with His return (Isaiah 2:12; Ezekiel 13:5; Acts 2:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:2) and as such include Rapture, Resurrection, Tribulation, and Millennium. In his vision John was projected across the entire span of the “day of the Lord” activities and all that was to come to pass was visualized to him.

The Lord's day is the NT equivalent of the Sabbath.

The day of the Lord is a time of judgment.

Sure - I can agree with that.  :)

(I also choose to believe the evidence pointing to what day of the week that specific day which John referred to is.)

Ok, but the point of the thread itself, and OP, at that, was to do a Bible study on the verse, and see what scripture says, rather than what others, years (1900) later, wrote on the subject.

I would disagree with pretty much all of that 'commentaries' propositions, being as they are unfounded from a scriptural standpoint, a linguistic standpoint, a structural standpoint, even a philosophic (as point 3) standpoint (for instance, why would such persons complete conjecture and failure to understand (the 'why' of) something be evidence for his point of view in substantial matters?).

Just to quickly address the points, as they are not really the point of the OP;

[1] There is no such thing as the "Christian Sabbath" in all of scripture.  As a secondary note, there is neither a "Jewish Sabbath" in all of scripture.  In regards the 7th day of the week, it is always "the sabbath of the LORD thy God" (see, Ex. 20:8-11).

[2] In the NT, the "first [day] of the week" is never the "sabbath", or even called the "sabbath", anywhere.  In fact, "the first [day] of the week" in koine Greek (and one Hebrew) is as follows:

Genesis 1:5 (Masoretes Hebrew) יום אחד׃ (Transliterated) yôm echäd f
Matthew 28:1(a) - (Koine Greek) οψε δε σαββατων (Transliterated) oye de sabbatwn
Matthew 28:1(b) - (Koine Greek) εις μιαν σαββατων (Transliterated) eiV mian sabbatwn
Mark 16:2 - (Koine Greek) και λιαν πρωι της μιας σαββατων (Transliterated) kai lian prwi ths mias sabbatwn
Mark 16:9 - (Koine Greek) αναστας δε πρωι πρωτη σαββατου (Transliterated) anastas de prwi prwth sabbatou
Luke 24:1 - (Koine Greek) τη δε μια των σαββατων (Transliterated) th de mia twn sabbatwn
John 20:1 - (Koine Greek) τη δε μια των σαββατων (Transliterated) th de mia twn sabbatwn
John 20:19 - (Koine Greek) τη μια των σαββατων (Transliterated) th mia twn sabbatwn
Acts 20:7 - (Koine Greek) εν δε τη μια των σαββατων (Transliterated) en de th mia twn sabbatwn

1 Corinthians 16:2 - (Koine Greek) κατα μιαν σαββατων (Transliterated) kata mian sabbatwn

Thus the "first [day] of the week" (NT) is always just the number "one" ("mian") or "first" ("prwi prwth") in regards, or towards the culmination of the week, which was God's rest, the seventh day, the sabbath of the LORD thy God.

[3] Subjective opinion, based upon the commentators own failure to understand.  Not much to address here.  It is not evidence for anything, other than the commentators own aprioric ignorance (not knowing).  Just because the commentator doesn't understand, doesn't mean that God didn't do exactly as they do not understand.  As the scripture says,

Isa_55:8  For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

[4] Yes, "the day of the LORD" is speaking about Jesus' return (both 2nd and 3rd Advents).  Even the commentators example of Isaiah 2:12, is in stark contrast to Isaiah 58:13, which John draws from as shown from the contextual parallelism/chiasm in Revelation 1.  John uses a differing phrase, in Revelation  16:14 to refer to the "day of the Lord".  Finally, Revelation, covers a lot more than simply the "Rapture, Resurrection, Tribulation, and Millennium", as shown by the statement in Revelation 1:

Rev 1:19  Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

[1] things which thou hast seen (past)

[2] things which are (present)

[3] things which shall be hereafter (future)

For instance, Revelation 12:1-4 covers events long before John was even born.  Revelation 13:1-2 would cover events from the time of Babylon to Papal Rome, and Revelation 17 does the same, and beyond it even unto the present day (which exists before the millennium of Revelation 20).  Revelation 5 even covers the ascension of Jesus Christ, just before Pentecost, tying into Psalms 133:1-3; Acts 2:1-3,4,33, &c.

Anyways, hope that this response makes sense.

Natural to Spiritual.

As John on the Island of Patmos, alone with God, on the 7th day, the sabbath of the Lord, the Lord's day, has a Revelation of Jesus Christ, his Creator and Redeemer, so too can we, in that same day, the day that Jesus began preaching the Gospel (Luke 4) under the power of the Holy Ghost/Spirit, and as we study His life, and think upon Him with which we have to do, it will bring that same Revelation of God's character into our own lives and hearts, and we too, shall truly be a son of God:

2Pe 1:15  Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
2Pe 1:16  For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
2Pe 1:17  For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
2Pe 1:18  And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
2Pe 1:19  We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Rom_8:19  For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

Part 1 - The Creator Of Rest

In the beginning, on the seventh day after all His work, the LORD God did rest,

and turning to the man there with Him, saying, this is what I have blessed;

and down through the long ages, it would remain the gift from Heaven,

holy and sanctified, the day the Creator spent with man - seven;

a vast temple of sacred time, enclosed for the faithful steward to keep,

knowing the Shepherd worked tirelessly, to have a place for all His precious sheep;

peace-filled and tranquil, calm and nothing over to be stressed,

Oh!, what special Day with our Father!, this Sabbath of His glorious rest.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

      Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

      This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
