What makes you wary of heiser?? I'm curious to know. I also agree with your explanation on topical preaching, not much depth to it. I'm seeking to find out what the Bible is really meaning to tell us.

@Starise

I agree with your whole post.

Does anyone have any good suggestions on expository teachers or preacher? Someone new i can look into

Have a look at brother RC Sproule, who the Lord has taken. He was a lovely brother and very good teacher/preacher.

I don't want to say much, until or unless I've looked into Heiser's teaching a bit more.  At the moment, it's mostly a gut feeling, which is hard to put into words.

From times past: Jonathan Edwards, John Gill's Bible commentary and many others

More modern: Martyn Lloyd Jones, John Stott, Sinclair Ferguson (but watch out for cessationism), John MacArthur (but I'd avoid his eschatology), John Piper, Alan Cairns, etc.

As always, test everything against Scripture, because even the best preachers/teachers make mistakes.

I like to study the Word of God with really good Bible teachers such as Mark Hitchcock, Dr. Charles Stanley, John F. Walvoord, Moody, David Jeremiah.

If you research critique on Heiser you might find what it is that's bothering you. I believe he is a brother who does his best to interpret everything accurately, however there are a few issues because he takes a few liberties here and there with interpretations. Not to mention leaning very heavily on extra biblical works which isn't a sin of itself but these should never correct to superced the Bible.

I don't have the time to listen to many preachers. I mostly get my teaching at church and on my own. Plenty of podcasts out there. To answer @Greenie I think Charles Stanley has a very balanced approach that I like. He preaches in a very personal way, so i agree with @missmuffet on him. Moody I am familiar with.

Many of the best pastors are not big names. You can find them by scanning podcasts through Google or similar. They are just small time preachers who have their sermons posted to podcasts. There is one guy I listen to almost every morning who for some reason I can't recall his name. When it comes to me I'll post it. If you haven't played podcasts before they are just uploaded audio files you can get by searching them.

Just a topical discussion here but what do you like (a little more) Teaching, by that I mean being taught the contexts and little details about the scripture. About its roots and how the scriptures line up with other scripture.

Or do you like Preaching more, by this one I mean good ol holy ghost filled preaching. A minister whose just on fire about the word

Hi Greenie,

Another perspective I propose to you that hasn't been mentioned as yet. Try to get an understanding of what preaching and teaching is from an original language point of view (Hebrew/Greek) with a more emphasis on Hebrew. As we tend to view what many call "the 5 fold ministry" Apostle, Pastor, Teacher, Evangelist, Prophet from our modern western Greco/Roman mindset which is often vey different from the ancient Hebrew mindset which is the mindset and culture our Bibles were written in.

These gifts/offices which are given by the Holy Spirit are for the exhortation and edification of the BODY. These terms also need to be understood from an original language perspective. Much can be learned from understanding how a shepherd lived and operated in the ancient Hebrew culture.

May this lead you into new insights into the scriptures.

Shalom

For me, my interest depends a lot on the teacher or preacher. Either one can have the same effect as giving me a sleeping pill if they are boring. I hate to admit I have nodded off on several occasions. The teacher is more stimulation to me because it's often a two way exchange and usually causes me to think more deeply. The preacher OTOH is one way leaving the participant to sit there for large amounts of time to either take in or endure it.Some preachers tend to present a lot more like teachers. Pulling their presentation from the quotes of various famous theologians, almost as if they are presenting a college course or something. Have you ever noticed talking to a pastor and hearing him behind a pulpit are often two different things? Pastors often take on a different persona. Almost as if in seminary they were instructed to have a specific kind of delivery when giving a sermon after which they return to being a normal person.

For me, the best pastors are those who talk to groups similar to the way they address individuals. It feels more like a one on one personal exchange and not some theatrical box of delivery tricks.

I hear that maybe 95% (here we go with that percent thingy again :D) of the churches today do not even touch biblical prophecy, including my own church. I don't know if I'm complaining or not, but our Wednesday evening Bible study has been turning into devotional preaching, no questions asked? I'm considering just staying at home and using the time to study, but there is so few people who attend Wednesday evenings. I would hate to be one of the few who attend, to be a cause for discontinuing Wednesday services. Perhaps I'm just getting another attitude that needs another adjustment?

Our Sunday School platform, topics, and program comes from 'Lifeway', Bible studies for life. No prophetic scripture study there either. When filling in as the substitute Sunday School Leader; if appliable to what we are studying, I'll address any relevant prophetic scripture that pertains to the day in which we live, time allowing.

I think expository Bible study, as well as Systematic Theology, is critical to understanding the whole Bible. Since my church does not cover 33% (here we go again) of the Bible that is prophetic in nature, I have to study it on my own. A forum like this can be a blessing to exchange our hermeneutics and thoughts with others, and gain additional perspective and understanding. But it can also be a curse; for reasons we are all aware of. Not to mention that Master lock...

Bad teaching.

Agreed! Notice I said what many call "the 5 fold ministry" not that I called them that! Yes that mindset is bad teaching! Typical Westernized Greek mindset view of the scriptures.

To be honest,  I love them both but...I really get into good teaching. I love to get into a good Bible study and get knowledge that I didn't receive before. Right now I'm listening to Dr. Chuck Missler and he brings the Bible and science together. I'll admit there's some stuff I don't understand he talks about and that I need to test the spirits but man does he reveal somethings (I don't think you get in church.) Also I've been listening to a little bit of Dr. Michael Hiser and he brings out somethings in the O.T. that I wouldn't have got on my own.

Does anyone else listen to these two Bible scholars?? If so what do you like and dislike about there teachings??

I've been learning a lot from the teaching of Dr. Michael S. Heiser, Dr. Ken Johnson, and the scientific side of things from Steven C. Meyer and Michael J. Behe.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
