I just read that it speaks to the hope of the coming rains that brings renewed life. This would not be a concept unfamiliar with other pagan deities. Do you have a source that suggests that Eugene Peterson intentionally chose this as a pagan reference.

And the Bible does contain references to other pagan quotes used in a "positive" manner.

It certainly isnt what the bible says though. 

I could not find anything peterson said about the message, let alone that one phrase.

It's as clear, if not clearer than...

What is wrong with what The Message says, is that it is not the same meaning as the original.  It adds things, changes things and omits things.  A paraphrase is supposed to convey the same message as the original, using different words; it is not supposed to make wholesale changes to the meaning.

One word (out of context by you) is your reason for rejecting an entire version?  Okay then!  You obviously want to invalidate the translation, not realizing that every translation has words that are questionable.

There is no such thing as a word-for-word translation.  All translations add things, change things and omit things.  The Message is meant to convey -> the message <- and I think it does that quite well.

It's simply your (unqualified) opinion that The Message makes wholesale changes to the meaning.  I disagree.

BTW, have you even read The Message?
