I've been encountering the phrase in the title of this topic with increasing frequency as of late, and I confess my cluelessness regarding such an assertion. I'm not aware of any instance in scripture where the Lord guaranteed mankind anything at all --- apart from death and judgment --- but seeing as how I don't know all there is to know, I might have missed something. This is entirely possible.

I thought a poll might be an interesting departure from the usual here on the General discussion forum. I set it to close next month, so there's plenty of time for members to participate if they wish (that is, if the topic goes anywhere). This has the potential to be a great topic... a controversial subject... or dead in the water. :D

We shall see!

Basicly ever ' right ' claimed by people today can be traced directly back to Christianity.

Under Gods law all people regardless of race, status, wealth or religeon are equal and are to be treated in the same way. You do not find this in roman or greek laws, or in islamic or hindu laws.

Freedom of the individual, again a judeochristian concept. slavery was forbidden, yet it was normal in the ancient world and in islam/hinduism.

Any nonchristian claiming human rights should be challenged where those rights come from.

Yes, and pretty much every right protected by the original constitution came straight from the Bible

@Marathoner

Thank you so much for asking about the phrase "God given right" !  :)

I have been puzzled too.  And recently even considered asking in one of the other threads on worthy....

If I may ask a few questions..

I am wondering is this phrase / concept an american one?  i.e cultural etc?

Or is it something actually in the Bible?

Also if I may ask my fellow brethren here on worthy who are not from North America  (or also those from North America but who are familiar with other parts of the world).. is this phrase commonly used outside North America where you are from etc?  Or is it mostly american english  or North America specific?

I truly truly mean no offence to anyone with my questions.  Trying to figure out what is cultural /society.. and what is actually Bible..

:b:

Thanks to everyone for your patience with me!  :)

ps.  To @Marathoner    Very sorry for asking so many questions in your poll thread..  I hope it is ok with you?  Not trying to hijack your thread.. just really really excited to be able to ask about something which has been puzzling to me!  :)

Thank you so much! :)

Of course it's fine, my friend. I'm paying attention to responses (and questions!) because I started this topic and poll to learn. :)

not a phrase you hear often in the UK .. just to answer abc question

I was always taught that with every " right " comes a responsibility ...God gave Adam the right to name all the animlas but the responsibility to care for them . There are several " Rights " such as the right for a bondman/slave to freedom butthe responsabilioty to work for it ( I believe 7 years is the normal amount of labour for freedom  plus more years for the wife or children he may have aquired whilst a slave /bondman  ?)   I cannot think of any instance when a " right " was given WITHOUT a corresponding responsability :noidea:

IMO the phrase is misused a lot. I ended up spending some time in the company of a group of so-called "progressive Christians". Had about as much as I can stomach of them but that's another matter entirely. it's very true that the US Constitution draws heavily from the Bible and uses the phrase, but in this era it feels like the phrase is mainly used to attempt to present a given thing as both culturally American AND culturally Christian.

So far as whether or not we actually have rights, I largely agree with ladypeartree. I feel like it's more accurate to say that God has made conditional promises and that His nature is such that we can count on Him to keep those promises. None of us are guaranteed so much as living through the next few seconds. We can be assured of our salvation through Jesus Christ, but again, I don't feel like this is presented as a right so much as an agreement, or in more Biblical terms, a covenant.

If we get to the place where we only want to do what God wants us to do, the whole question of rights goes away.

Let's see now… We have the right to do everything that the good LORD above has commanded us to do. 275376D5-DE7B-4CC3-A4F5-3722EDF98DF2.gif.b01e7d38e14c52cb0f87016bd5fc95c8.gif

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
