you have to confess with your mouth he is Lord.   saying call on him is way way to ambiguous to tell someone they are saved.  It has no followup at all.

Just going by what Romans 10:13 says bro - "Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord, shall be saved." So what would you add to that?

Explain exactly what calling on the name of the Lord means.

Quote

Matt 25:31-46

31 "But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 "And all the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. 34 "Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 'For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.' 37 "Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You drink? 38 'And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 'And when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' 40 "And the King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.' 41 "Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.' 44 "Then they themselves also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?' 45 "Then He will answer them, saying, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' 46 "And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
NASB

These people are shocked they are going to hell?    Why????

They did not do Jesus's second commandment.

Quote

Matt 7:21-23
veryone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. 22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.'
NASB

Prophesying, doing miracles and casting out demons....   I find it hard to believe they were not calling on his name when casting out demons if nothing else.

Here are two groups of people going to hell and they are shocked as to why.

It's my opinion that teaching things short of making Jesus Lord is what makes it possible.

All you have to do is believe....   I've heard that so many times it frustrates me.  I would find it hard to believe that the members of these two groups going to hell didn't believe Jesus was who he said.    Casting out demons is a very serious thing to do for a non believer.

Don't try and make it simple for it truly isn't.   Romans 10:9 is simple on the surface, but very hard to live up to if one is not really willing to be subjected to Jesus's Lordship.

Spurgeon said that Jonah learned more theology in the belly of a great fish - 'salvation is of the LORD' (Jonah 2.9) - than many doctors of divinity have ever learned.

The OP asked the members and the visitors to comment about their own understanding so it can be a beautiful discussion...

Not what he she said and we do not look to side with name stamps but with the context...of what it is said.

Today I listened to a very well known and respected pastor on the radio (I often hear & usually enjoy his ministry).  He was talking about what it means to be saved and that we all should be theologically clear about such a basic and critical concept.  As he kept talking I was listening for him to tell us the answer, because I consider it to be a very simple answer indeed. Then it was stated that the answer to "what it means to be saved" is laid out in an eight CD set that can be acquired from him.

While I'm sure the there are lots of great verses and observations in this rather large CD set, to me the simple answer is just this:

"Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."  Romans 10:13

"You must be born again." John 3:7

There it is! One calls on the name of the Lord Jesus; Jesus enters into their spirit (John 3:6 & 1 Cor 6:17) and they are born again with a new life of sonship.

So what am I missing . . . is this not as simple as can be?  :noidea:

Thank you for posting...this is commendable because faith in Jesus Christ cannot be judged by anything...

Not any good act of the believer can add to what Jesus Christ has done and not anything else can Judge faith in Jesus Christ because it's not about the person's righteousness but it is about Jesus Christ righteousness which is given to a believer the moment he believes...

Because Jesus Christ righteousness is our peace with the Heavenly Father..

Jesus Christ judges all things and everyone and hope that it is not new to everyone..,

When a believer is accused not for what he has done or doing but that because he is doing those things that Jesus Christ will Judge him to Hell this is not truth...definitely is not truth to Jesus Christ...to some people it may be truth for them but this is not the truth of Jesus Christ who has clothed with his righteousness everyone who believes in him and that's how he appears before Jesus Christ clothed with Jesus Christ righteousness unless he has not believe or he has been found without the faith of Jesus Christ in his heart...

So everyone can be saved who believes in him ...even if he believes in his heart the last moment of his Life...before he pass out and die...even a mute can be saved...even someone who believes and he says it is not one business whether I confess Jesus Christ to you or to anyone else....being stubborn like that he believes and when he out of his body and stands before Jesus Christ what he has in his heart is important and if he believes his faith is recorded in his heart even though he may have said sometimes that he does not believe to teas his brother who is going to tell him...well if you believe prove it to me by marrying the woman you live and have a family with her...and her children...

Thank you for the OP.

How would you condense that into a simple statement of 2-3 sentences? For instance, what would you say if someone asked how they might be saved?

By hearing the words of God

To call on the Lord can mean not to only name Jesus, but to trust in Him (Ephesians 1:12) . . . to call upon Jesus as our one and only Resource of salvation.

So, in case a person says a prayer naming Jesus, but the person does not trust in Him by submitting to Him . . . now we have a problem!

The person can take things into his or her own hands and free will controlling things. And this is what is really complicated!

And perhaps an unsaved person will mix with people who seem to be working wonders or really are. And then the unsaved person might "piggy-back" on what others do or seem to do, supposing he or she is part of it.

But Jesus does not believe them. Their saying it is so does not make it so . . . especially if Jesus never knew them. If they have been children of the father of lies (John 8:44), certainly they could be claiming what Jesus knows is not true.

And this deception stuff is what is complicated.

Trusting in Jesus by submitting to Him is good > "you will find rest for your souls" > in Matthew 11:29.

"But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him." (1 Corinthians 6:17)

When someone trusts in Jesus, God joins the person to Himself. And His power almighty does this and His power almighty keeps the person and changes the person into how Jesus is and how Jesus loves. So such is the person whom Jesus will know on the day of judgment >  1 John 4:17 >

"Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world." (1 John 4:17)

The simplicity is that God does this, and He knows how . . . so better than we can.

Yes, calling on the name of the Lord implies a lot.  This is reaching out to Him.  When you call a person's name, you get the person of that name!  It does mean that you are trusting Him and opening to Him.  He comes in and plants His life seed (Greek "sperma") into you and rebirth occurs!

The theology of salvation is vast and deep. But very clear. One is to believe from the heart. It's got to be more then believing the facts of Christ. It's wanting to be forgiven from sin guilt. To see Christ as the righteousness of God.  Jesus the lamb of God who takes away our sins. And to believe in Jesus Christ means to believe he is our righteousness and to know we are not justified by the law or any good work.  So that no one can boast before God the Father. But that we give God all the glory. Salvation !

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
