I think that the most important thing about the Parable of the Prodigal Son is that we are all him, at some times, in some ways.  We have all sinned and fallen short.  But God's grace is a freely given, and eternal gift of boundless love. He mercifully forgives, and joyfully receives us.  I don't look down at the prodigal son.  I'm him.  I celebrate the awareness that Jesus is the one who sticketh closer than any brother, even when we falter.

Yes, very well said.  The parable begins and ends with the prodigal being a son.  Permanent relationship.  When the son asked for his cut, in that culture was an extreme insult to the father, since inheritance only came after the father's death.  So, in essence, he was telling his father he wished he was dead.  But the father gave him the inheritance anyway, showing unconditional love for his son.  When the son "came to his senses" he acknowledged his sin and got up and returned to his father, to confess his sin to his face, which shows repentance.  That the father saw him from a distance showed his unconditional love for his son, just as our Heavenly Father will never leave us or forsake us.

Through the son's confession and repentance, he was restored to fellowship.

I sorry but the response is not in the context of the parable. The prophets never told the Israelites to disobey the Law and the rules of sanctification and the sacrifices for the forgiveness of their sins. And the religious Calendar.

All three of the parables (Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, Lost Son) were about repentance and returning to God and about how there will much joy in heaven over one sinner that repents vs. all the others that need no repentance.

We are in the time of the Sinai Covenant before the Cross and Jesus was speaking to the Jews who kept the Law of God and needed the Priesthood. And the sacrifices for sins and the cleansing ceremonies to sanctified them. The Lamb of had no been offered yet.

The Lamb of God was saying these parables before his death on the Cross.

Lets be real, we both know why you reject Jesus words and teachings as if they do not apply to you today and why you twist his words to mean something completely different.  Are you a follower of Christ or is someone else your Messiah?

"If anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge and condemn the world [that is, to initiate the final judgment of the world], but to save the world. "Whoever rejects Me and refuses to accept My teachings, has one who judges him; the very word that I spoke will judge and condemn him on the last day. - Jhn 12:47-48

Lovely narrative Dennis; thank you for this summary.  Beautifully written and it read like an engaging novel.

It is clear in the parable of the prodigal that it isn't about salvation, but sons that confess and repent.

Jesus said this parable and he then inserted something prophetic that it can apply to him only and to no one else.

[24] For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

it doesn't apply to the parable at hand because no where it said that there are witness of his death and who killed him and no notice of death was given to his father and they stopped preparing for his burial and said "?he is alive again.

established in front of everyone else and

The same can be said about Jesus. The Heavenly Father knew that Jesus will die and after the resurrection he can say "my son was dead and is alive again".

In this parable the Son did not died.

And what the Father did it is not customarily to the Jewish customs at that time under the Covenant of Sinai.

Sacrifices had to be offered by the Priest in the Temple and sanctified ceremonies to take place according to the Law. And the new day has to come for the Son to be declared ceremonially clean to the minimum.

This might be why the eldest Son refused to enter the house because he may have seen it as unclean and he didn't want to become unclean.

PS

Please give counsel and reminder. And help the brother with the loose words not to be proud of what he said against a brother in the Lord. And question his faith in Jesus Christ in public and before the other members and non members. A global accusation. An accusation also in the Heavenly and before the judge of all. Who disagrees with him in all his personal accusations against my person.

I am guilty of plagiarism from time to time, primarily because I don't have the time or laziness to include the citation. It is a discussion forum, after all.

Then again, I am not writing a book or collage paper for grading or peer review. However, there can be consequences for taking credit for someone else's work.

I deleted my post, after rereading it, it sounded a little too much like an accusation.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
