  1. adhere to is another term Amplified uses for faith and believe.
  2. Mat 24:2 And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down." Mat 24:3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?" These things are the destruction of the Temple. Your coming is His coming for the believers. The end of the age may be the times of the Gentiles or this dispensation of grace, or even Armageddon. To be able to return with His saints and/or angels His believers must have already been snatched up or raptured. Many of that generation did see the destruction of the Temple. Others say that this generation refers to the generation since the return of the Jews to Israel and Jerusalem being returned to their control in 1967. Prophecy is like looking at a series of mountain tops and not seeing what lies between. It may skip many centuries.
  3. In addition to the word trust is "rely upon". To have faith in Jesus Christ is to trust in and rely upon Him. I pray about little things daily--yesterday it was a misplaced credit card. I relied on God to open my eyes to where it was left, and He did. By depending upon Him daily He also builds our faith to be able to trust Him in calamity. My pastor always says that depending on God is not a crutch, it is a gurney. We rest our whole lives on Him conversing with Him daily, and on the shed blood of Christ on the cross to save us eternally.
  4. In the 50s we were taught to not discuss religion or politics because it caused offense to people. Act 5:27 When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council. The high priest questioned them, Act 5:28 saying, “We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” Act 5:29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. I agree that it is God's will that all come to repentance. If we can share a seed, a testimony or and encouraging word in His name, we can do no other. We are constrained to share the good news of God's loving grace.
  5. I especially agree with this statement. Kids learn what you do more than what you say. Give them love, consistent discipline, praise and encouragement. Be a stay at home mom while they are at home. I always said that if they mess up I want it to be my fault, not blamed on someone else. That doesn't mean that as they get older they won't make bad choices. But it is up to us to bring them up to know God. We can teach them to apologize and make it right when they do wrong. We can also teach them to pray and ask God to forgive them from the time they are very young. As far a schooling goes, our older son went to two Christian schools. In each of them he had an abusive teacher. The first abused him emotionally. The second abused other students physically. He will never send his kids to a private school. But today the indoctrination in public schools a much worse than 40 years ago. I honestly don't know what I would do.
  6. 2Co 8:3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 2Co 8:4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— 2Co 8:5 and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. 2Co 9:6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2Co 9:7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2Co 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 2Co 9:9 As it is written, "He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." 2Co 9:10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
  7. One of the reasons that Paul was chosen was that he was a Roman citizen as well as a Pharisee of the Pharisees. He was educated as both so he was better able to reach a wider range of people; knowing how each thought he could communicate better with a wider range of peoples. His zeal was also recognized as a virtue when turned to glorify Christ.
  8. The problem addressed in this thread is that The Message is not a translation but a paraphrase which departs wildly from any text. As such it should be considered a commentary rather than a Bible.
  9. Many of the KJV words were translated correctly in the 1600s but have changed in meaning over the centuries. One of those words is conversation; it meant manner of life back then but today it means a dialogue between people. The Message is not a translation. Neither is the Living Bible. The New Living Translation retains a lot of the words in the Living Bible but tries to make it truer to the text. I am not a fan. The New World Translation is not a translation since the changes were made by a person who does not know the original languages as he demonstrated in a court of law. Likewise, many of the translations produced by the American Bible Society for poorly educated or English second language people are too loosely translated, like Good News. If every jot and tittle was held to by God, it would seem that we need to be as accurate as possible. NIV is good in some areas but some of its translators used too much paraphrase in the portions they translated thought for thought so I trust it less. NASV was a good translation of its manuscript but I personally believe the "earliest" manuscript left out too much. So I prefer NKJV, Amplified Bible or ESV. ESV restored most eliminated passages to the text with a foot note. Amplified adds words other literal translations have used to translate a Greek or Hebrew word; other words added by translators are in brackets so you may understand it is not part of the Greek or Hebrew text. Others that I refer to are: YLT, LITV, Wuest, ALT3.
  10. Psalms 56:8 Jamison, Faucet & Brown God is mindful of his exile and remembers his tears. The custom of bottling the tears of mourners as a memorial, which has existed in some Eastern nations, may explain the figure.
  11. Yes. Jesus answered people according to the requirements of the law which they were still under. The New Covenant was ratified by the blood of Christ. The Old Covenant was ratified by the blood of calves and goats. Heb 9:17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. Heb 9:18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. Heb 9:19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, Heb 9:20 saying, "This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you."
  12. Abiding in Christ produces the fruit of the Spirit-- Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, Gal 5:23 Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge]. Before we click the post button we all need to do an attitude check: are those virtues evident in my post?
  13. Our pastor is so sick of the prosperity gospel rich pastors that he has never asked for money for himself or our church. We never have fund raisers even for building projects. The school we support has done so. Our pastor lives modestly and takes homeless people into his home at times. He is more apt to give people works to pay for aid. He may not appear at my door when I am not there, but it is hard to keep track of 1500 people.
  14. Not much has changed. The eye keeps telling the hand "I have no need of you" because it doesn't yet understand that we must function in coordination to accomplish the work of God. So the debates continue with one calling the other a heretic simply because they understand truth from a different perspective. How that must grieve the Holy Spirit of God! Each part of the body has something to offer to the common good; even those in the old worn out suits or old wineskins can birth the new wine that needs to be poured in new wineskins, just as Judaic Christians gave birth to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
  15. The Scriptures say they searched the Scriptures to see if these things are true. A person searching for truth is not searching to see if these things are false. They search the Old Testament to see if the Scriptures actually say what Paul was teaching. That is how I took my adult confirmation Checking first to see if the verses were out of context I read the chapters before and after. I hungered for truth in doctrine. So most was confirmed in Scripture which I received with joy as the Holy Spirit enlightened me. Yes I asked a lot of questions, but they were not trying to disprove but to understand more fully.
  16. God had drawn me to donate to a church that reached out to kids on drugs. I had never given to any church or group. The real mystery is that the church had no idea of their urgent need. I searched for them and found them, and gave them the money. Afterwards I sat for a bit pondering the problem. Someone came to the wife of the pastor with a notice that they were overdrawn at the bank. On the way home I was in awe that God would use me to help provide for them when they didn't even know the extent of their need. I surrendered to Him right there on the highway, giving Him all my doubts and arguments and all of me. I could do nothing but make a mess of my life in my own strength. It was much better to make Him Lord and Master to straighten out the mess and use His word to keep me out of trouble. Overwhelming joy suddenly flooded over me till I wept. Waking up early each morning flooded with joy I would take the Bible outside and read it searching for something that would express what I was feeling. This went on for days.
  17. Abstain from that type of meditation and agree if you can only do the exercises if they will not excuse you.
  18. The last I had heard was that it was that of a person who had been crucified, but that thousands were crucified during the Roman persecutions of Jews and the church of those centuries. There is nothing to say it was that of Jesus Christ.
  19. When we are born again the Spirit of Christ comes to reside in us. Christ in us makes us worthy, not anything we do of ourselves. When we are in Him and He in us, we inherit all the heavenly treasures of Ephesians 1. Jesus said "without Me you can do nothing". We must be attached to the Vine with His life and love flowing out from us to others. That is bearing fruit. So we walk in the Spirit by reaching out to those where God's compassion directs us. It is Christ in us directing the work, not self. We are told that all our righteousness is as filthy rags. It is the righteousness of Christ Who lives in us that makes us acceptable. As we continue to behold Him in Scripture the Holy Spirit changes us more and more to reflect Him. So keep your focus on the Person of Jesus Who came to reveal the Father to us. Our salvation is a gift, nothing we can earn or be worthy of. It is by grace--unearned favor--that we believe and are saved.
  20. The prophets were to be stoned to death if they made false prophecies or lied and made false statements. There is so much false in most of the the apocrypha that they would never be considered to be Holy Scripture. They are full of error. I have read most of them, some only in part.
  21. 1Jn 3:9 AMP No one born (begotten) of God [deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] practices sin, for God's nature abides in him [His principle of life, the divine sperm, remains permanently within him]; and he cannot practice sinning because he is born (begotten) of God. 1 Jn 3:9 ALT3. Everyone having been begotten of God is not practicing sin, because His seed abides in him, and he is not able to be sinning because he has been begotten of God. 1Jn 3:9 (9-10) Wuest Everyone who has been born out of God with the present result that he is a born-one of God does not habitually commit sin because His seed remains in him. And he is not able habitually to sin, because out of God he has been born with the present result that he is a born-one of God. ALT3 comes with translation notes of the Byzantine text and tells precisely the reasons why it is translated that way. Word Study Dictionary: 4160 ποιέω poiéō; (II) To do, expressing an action as continued or not yet completed, what one does repeatedly, habitually, like prássō(G4238), to practice. I also use Scripture to interpret Scripture and I understand the point you are making and have respectfully considered it. You make a good point; but in this case we are looking at the most precise translation of a word in context with the passage. It is referring to ongoing sin. So we will agree to disagree.
  22. 1Jn 3:9 ESV No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. There is no direct translation of the tense used in these phrases. It is similar to the Latin present progressive; my understanding of Greek tenses is limited but I know the problem of translating something that doesn't have an English counterpart. It means you have to get wordy, which isn't as poetic. KJV was criticized by its contemporaries for sacrificing accuracy to be poetic. This is one place where that is true. ESV has done a better job of conveying that a born again person doesn't continue to make a practice of sinning. At least he is miserable if he does sin and strives not to do so. A person who is not born again doesn't care and indulges.
