There are a few I stay away from, New Century Version, and the Message/

I'm not too much a fan for NLT, or the 3 different NIV's, but I don't think they're the worst.

The Message Bible is more like a someone's sermon on the Bible than an actual Bible. Sometimes it's a good aid as far as highlighting Scripture a different way, like someone might do in a sermon. But one needs to recognize it as one man's interpretation and thus should be received with a grain of salt. But we should do that with any sermon, really. Check all things with the pure word.

I have to pretty well agree. I have a calendar w/ random verses for the day from various translations. Some of those verses are from The Message and while it certainly wouldn't be my choice for serious study, it does once in a while make some sense. I liked one verse in particular from Proverbs or Psalms that talked about not going to "smart mouth college." I thought it was rather cute and it made sense for the context.

I disagree .The message isi a commentary on the bible, but it is a commentary filled with flaws, outright errors, newage biases and twisting of the meaning of scripture beyond belief.

To me, itis the worst Christian "book".

The JW "bible" and the RSV tie for the worst bible.

I don't like when someone takes Hebraic understanding of blessings and birthrights and then "Gentilize" the promises to fit "believers" today as a replacement theology. They are two different things.

True. But I've heard people say that since we have been "grafted on to the vine," those promises are also ours to claim. How would you respond?

What were those promices Wyguy?

Specifically, I have no idea. But from what I've heard said, all the blessings that God blessed Israel with, are ours also to claim.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I agree with that idea.

Oh, I have to add to the list of terrible, so-called "Christian" books: ANYTHING written by Herbert W. Armstrong - those books messed me up for years! :foot-stomp:

Going with "The Message" being one of if not the worst. Around here for a bit of humor, we will occasionally read a "verse" from it for a laugh...

Let's hear from the Dr. who wrote it:

An excerpt from the "Christianity Today" magazine from December 2002. In it they interviewed Dr. Eugene Peterson, the author of "The Message" bible.

When he was asked "Do you consider "The Message" God's Word?

"...in a congregation where somebody uses it in the Scripture reading, it makes me uneasy."

I would never recommend it to be used as, "hear the Word of God from the Message." It surprises me how many do."

"I like to hear those more formal languages in the pulpit."

"I did the Beatitudes in about ten minutes."

Sadly, there are a number of churches that use this messy Message to preach from the pulpit.

It is said to be Rick Warrens favorite "bible" and he quoted from it (along with 14 or so other Bibles) a number of times in the "The Purpose Driven Life"

Bad books, many already mentioned...

Let me add one that had many churches in an uproar in 1987, it was called "88 Reasons Why the Rapture is in 1988"

At the time I was going to a church where this was all the rage. I gave them many Scripture verses on why Jesus was not going to show up on "Q" and was not heard...

22 years later, we still await and look forward to our Lord's return.

(1Co 15:51-58)

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

The Holy Spirit is with those of you who didn't like "the Pupose Drive Life" by Rick Warren. He is a new ager, part of the emergent church. Google Rick Warren and the new age.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
