Imagine the shift away from the public attitude on same-sex marriage if "The New England Primer" by the Rev. Dr. Watts were used today for the ABCs in the classroom!

(I can here the public outcry "separation of Truth and State" as well!)

Forces of Cultural Change: Explaining the Shift in Public Attitude on Same-Sex Marriage

Last week I wrote about public opinion polls, arguing that they are influenced by people's desire to give socially acceptable answers to human questioners and that poll results can differ vastly when a robotic caller is employed. If, however, we accept as true a shift in public opinion on same-sex marriage, what trends and forces explain that change?

The most visible is the entertainment industry's increasingly affirmative depictions of homosexuality. Soap operas, such as All My Children, that introduced gay themes and gay relationships as early as 2000, movies like Brokeback Mountain, The Color Purple, and Precious, and the continuing string of actors and actresses who have come out in recent years have no doubt helped move public opinion toward support of same-sex marriage. Although most religious groups, including non-Christian ones in their orthodox forms, oppose same-sex marriages, there are notable exceptions among Christian groups. Episcopalians, Unitarian Universalists, and the United Church of Christ all support same-sex marriages. The ordination of gay priests and same-sex marriages continue to split numerous churches and denomination.

Besides the endorsement of gay marriage in Hollywood, another force of cultural change is our schools. Public schools have pushed an agenda that includes the normalizing of homosexual relationships and greater tolerance for sexual exploration. Increasingly, young people are surprising their parents by coming out of the closet. Bible-believing Christians are surprising their friends, neighbors, and congregants by shifting their stance to one of acceptance when a relative adopts a gay lifestyle. These are the times in which we live. Moreover, we can expect the percentage of young people who express same-sex attractions to grow because of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) propaganda campaign that is taking place in many public schools across the nation.

Excellent post. I would just add that the media plays a role in this as well, whether knowingly or not, they are repeating the lie on a daily basis. The more people hear a lie, the more believable it becomes. While I think the numbers have shifted as the younger generation becomes part of the polling group, I don't believe it has shifted by the margin they claim. In Michigan our ban on same sex marriage was recent, and it wasn't close, if taken again, the results would be the same.

I also agree with Littlelambseativy, this is all happening much faster than I expected it to. The only thing not happening is something from God to show this world He's real and He cares about what is happening.

You're probably asking what do I think He should do? I think He should rapture the saints. Maybe in the old days God could bring a storm or an Earthquake and people knew it was from Him and they knew it meant He was unhappy with what they were doing. But that doesn't work anymore.

I feel that we need God to come back, and I mean Jesus.

It is quite surprising how fast public opinion is shifting. Just a few election cycles ago, Republican state legislatures were putting referendums on gay marriage on the ballot as a way to turn out more Conservative voters.

I think President Obama coming out in favor of same sex marriage has played a huge role in shifting public opinion. People tend to take their cues on political issues from politicians they support, and over half of voters voted for Obama.

The focus has been taken off the sin and placed on the individual. If homosexuality is no longer considered sinful, why is gay marriage wrong? Most people don't view marriage as an institution given to us by God. It's a legal document.

We knew these events would be happening - what surprises me is the speed at which all of this is coming - weeks of decades.

I also agree with Littlelambseativy, this is all happening much faster than I expected it to.

When a woman is experiencing labor pains, those pains aren't evenly spaced. As the birth of the child draws near, the pain intensifies and the time between contractions becomes shorter.

We are witnessing the birth pains of a new era.

Because of following the whole word of God, not just parts you agree with, the family is being divided. Jesus told us that this wold happen, and it is. The world, as it moves further from God then any time before, fights against the core beliefs of a believer, which is God. This make sit hard for all family members. The lost don't understand what we continue to follow God and the saved don't understand how they could not see the truth. Yes, we are told they are blind, but the saved do hope that they will turn and don't want to give up, no matter how much it hurts them.
