Patricia -- the strongest hurricane ever recorded -- barreled closer and closer Friday morning to Mexico's Pacific coast, where residents have been told to brace for its 200-mph sustained winds and torrential rains.

The Miami-based meteorological center, in its 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET) advisory, warned of a "potentially catastrophic landfall ... in southwestern Mexico" late that afternoon or early evening. While its strength could fluctuate, "Patricia is expected to remain an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane through landfall."

Patricia has potential to cause massive death and destruction over a large swath of the Mexican Pacific coast, including the tourist hot spots of Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco.

Citing observations by hurricane hunters, Patricia is "the strongest hurricane on record in the National Hurricane Center's area of responsibility (AOR) which includes the Atlantic and the eastern North Pacific basins," according to a Friday morning forecast discussion.

I heard tonight.I sure hope it loses ground over water because if it hits at 200 MPH it will be devastating.

The changes and intensity of a hurricane, can be predicted by the position of the sun, moon and planets against the background of the milky way, and in relation to each other. In other words the universe around the earth affects its weather. 

I was going to post the movements of Patricia, with the forecast of it dying out very quickly yesterday, but upon reading the news today, it has already happened, in fact started to happen about 35 hours ago.

One simple way of getting a general idea of how things are progressing, is the position of the moon to the sun.

The ideal setting for a hurricane is when the moon is approaching 120 degrees back from the sun. For example if the sun is setting in the west, the moon should be about halfway to the zenith to the east.

Depending on when the hurricane started, determines when it will peak in strength. So if it started two days before reaching the 120 degree mark, it will become a raging storm, and you would hope that it does not strike the coasts then. 

Once the moon heads towards the 180 degree angle to the sun or opposite to the sun, the hurricane can be stopped very quickly. 

The position of the sun against the background constellations also affects what may take place. Together with the positions of the other planets, it is possible to predict the weather to about 85% accuracy, without listening to the weather report or going outside. that application also applies to going forward or backward in time. So it is possible to say what the weather was like on a specific date in the past, as well as for a future wedding or whatever. But part of the calculation involves a fairly accurate history of a specific location, because of localized climates. So it is easier to make predictions for a whole city and its regions in general.

Next time a hurricane builds up, we'll try it out. At the moment I am trying to get hold of a good simulator that shows all the details of the sky in 3D. So far I have not found a really good one, if anyone can suggest a site it would be much appreciated.

Well from what I read it landed with winds sustained at 165 mph....    Not the 200 predicted as it landed, but how much less can 35 mph be at those speeds...   I can't imagine winds over that large an area....   it would be like a F-3 tornado that covered an entire state...

I haven't heard of damage but I haven't watched tv either.

Well from what I read it landed with winds sustained at 165 mph....    Not the 200 predicted as it landed, but how much less can 35 mph be at those speeds...   I can't imagine winds over that large an area....   it would be like a F-3 tornado that covered an entire state...

Yes,I heard it landed with a Category 4 instead of a 5.Still very,very bad.

If I have done my math correctly, the force due to winds of 200 mph vs. 165 mph, is an increase of about 47%, since force goes up as a square of the velocity. Looking at it the other way, 165 is a 32% reduction in force over 200, a lot either way, but reducing the power by a third, is nothing to sneeze at either!.
