Not quite same, one is a person and one is an action. Love the sinner hate the sin

That is an extremely good point.   So there is a level that we do not let the unbeliever in. I mean I will love and forgive the guy who killed my first wife 36 years ago....but do I have to invite him over for dinner?

We can let people use us as door mats. What about the toxic person? Although I can pray for them. What is the difference between liking someone and loving someone?

Matthew 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 [o]But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust

Okay God says we have to love them...but do we have to like them?

I have dealt with a lot of people over the years and at first the worst ones among them (Trolling Atheists) I found very hard to love. They were rude crude immature and disruptive all things that don't sit well with me. But as a went on I realized that while some of these people were just plain immature ...whatevers, some of them were hurt and lashing out because something inside them told them they wanted God to be real, but something in their life made that very difficult. The ability to separate those two is not always easy, which is why I think God wants us to treat everyone with love, lest in our Christian zeal we steamroll someone who really needs help. A failing I still fall into today.

But the question I am left with is this. What is the difference between loving your enemy and liking them. And are you required to do both?

The point is to try to leave all hatred against them which is an internal barrier between u n God.

There are people, believers,  I have not liked for various reasons.
But I will always pray for them, till I see them through God's eyes.
I don't lie to myself or con myself to 'make believe' to like them.
I just treat them with 'willfull' love, and try to see them as someone Jesus died for.
It works for me.

Hi Riverwalker.

I had been exposed to some of those callous Atheist people as well, so I get that. They can be especially abrasive.I think what really got to me the most with those people was what they were doing to our savior. Jesus still has people spitting into His face today. :emot-fail:

They have no idea what they are doing.

Anyways....back OT, no I don't think we are required to do both because 'like' is not something we can really change. It is inherent to us as individuals. I think we can sometimes come to like people over time. Maybe someone we didn't initially warm up to becomes more likable over time.

Love is an action verb in this context. God says to LOVE our enemies and others. Apparently we can learn to love anyone. Husbands LOVE your wives. This isn't conditional on whether they are always lovable. Like OTOH is not the same. I might not LIKE coconut cake. I might not like people who wear dreadlocks and smell. I can still LOVE them. I might not like over talkative loudmouths who won't let anyone else talk. I can still LOVE then. Even though love is often equated with a feeling I think it's more of an action. Feelings are fickle. It's a choice to open up an emotion.

So how can I love but not like someone? We try to see them through the eyes of Christ. Jesus loves them.He knows everything about them and still loves them. He doesn't like sin, yet He loves us.

Easier said than done sometimes. I acknowledge that.

Thank you for expressing the truth in this way, brother. We do the best we can, wherever we happen to be, trusting in God to conform us to the image of Jesus Christ by His Spirit. He is indeed faithful to continue this work from glory to glory. Praise the Lord!

Ok, they are definitions of types of love. What is your definition of love itself and what that entails, what is involved in showing love.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
