Immunizing infants

I have no children, but someday my wife and I plan on having children.

I have always assumed until the past few years that immunizing infants was a no-brainer, but lately I have read some literature that states that doing such is doing more harm than good.

These people claim that we are putting poison in our baby's body and there are documented cases where it actually leads to thousands of deaths each year in the USA.

They also say that the drug companies that put forth these shots know them to be bad, yet they invested so much money in them that they still put them out to get $ $ $.

Also, what about public schools and immunization records? Is there any way to get kids in public schools with no shot records due to religious beliefs?

What do you all think?

All of mine got their shots....I don't know. I guess it all boils down to personal beliefs.

If I were to go through all that again, the kids would get their shots.

Deaths caused by medication is not a unheard of occurance, with everything we take (medically) there is always a chance of side-effects and death. Just listen to the warning given on tv when they advertise a new drug. It actually makes the cure seem worse than the disease. But I think when you compare the numbers much more benefit than don't.

Just for example, my daughter is allergic to some antibiotics, well I didn't know this until she was perscribed them. Praise God it wasn't a airway problem she had or that could of very well led to death.

Where do you stand on this issue?

Both of my children have been immunized. They had the commen side effects of low temp and injection soreness. But other than that they are fine.

I will say that I flatly refused the chicken pox vaccine for both of them. I will though rethink that if they don't get them by the age of 12. I homeschool my kids so their contact with sick children is very limited. I got them the flu shot one year and they became more ill with it than what they did the previous year when they didn't have it...so thats another one I have to consider again this year at flu season.

What do we say to their parents if they have more children?

"Please please please immunize this child as well."

That would be very uncompassionate to the greiving parent, wouldn't it?

Where did you get that statistic? I don't think that's accurate.

I have heard several times that the "P" in the "DPT" shot (Pertussis) is filthy. When there are problems, that is the one that caused it.

If you want to find out about your rights as far as vaccines and school, I would write to the American Center for Law and Justice. Perhaps they can answer your question.

All US states allow for religious exemption from immunizations. There are pros and cons on each side of the argument. All my kids have had vaccinations.

I would always say pray about your decision though. Ask the Lord what He wants you to do, if this is something that troubles you.

I've seen this debate before and actually the risk is very minimal to the advantages. If we stop immunizing our children because of some small risks, we will enable the diseases to come back. Then What???

IMHO Immunize your children and make sure you get your tetanus every 10 years.

I would check and see if the shots contain any mercury, and would not give it to any infant (below 2 years) There is a pretty close relationship with the use of the mercury compounds (used to extend the vaccation shelf life) and mental problems. We gave our kids shots, but I would have to think long and hard to repeat it for infants.

My two year old daughter has been given all her shots, and she's smarter than me. I think I got the mercury shots.

Seriously, immunize your children. Diseases such as TB and polio are making a strong comeback. And while your young'ens are getting their shots, pray for their health also.

If most everyone else is immunized, then the risk of your unimmunized child getting ill is very low. If most everyone else is not immunized, then your unimmunized child stands a high risk of getting a terrible disease.

As an example, smallpox:

With the vaccination:

1 in 1,000 people may experience a severe rash.

14-52 people in 1 million vaccinations may experience a life threatening reaction.

1-2 people in 1 million vaccinations will die of smallpox.

Without the vaccination:

Smallpox has 2 variants. Variola major is the more deadly form, with a typical mortality of 20-40 percent of those infected. The other type, V. minor, only kills 1% of its victims.

Many survivors are left blind in one or both eyes from corneal ulcerations, and persistent skin scarring - pockmarks - is nearly universal. Smallpox was responsible for an estimated 300-500 million deaths in the 20th century. As recently as 1967, The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 15 million people contracted the disease and that two million died in that year.

That means, that with V major, 200,000 to 400,000 out of 1 million people will die. Even with the less fatal variant, 10,000 people per million will die.

1-2 people per million die from vaccination versus 200,000-400,000 per million will die without vaccinations. Vaccinations save lives. We are so isolated now, that we forget the horrors of these diseases. You shouldnt forget.
