The "sons of God" may refer to other homo erectus including the Neanderthals. They married human women to give birth to the giants.

The other possibility is "sons of God" refers to angels breaking laws. They tried to make humans to take their form to marry the pretty women. But their limited knowledge can only allow them to make the homo erectus such as Neanderthals. They then take on the "human form" in order to marry human women. That gave birth to the giants.

We don't have a whole lot of history in the Bible speaking of pre-flood times.   We do know that a lot of corruption went around and there was genetic manipulation between angels and women.

Outside Biblical history we are told that the watcher angels taught men how to cross one species with another.  While I can't declare that as 100% reality, it does seem that way looking at some archeological findings.

I think if it really mattered it would have been recorded in the Bible.

The literal and the symbolic Bible are different. In this case we are talking about Genesis 23:29

29 I will not drive them out before you in a single year; otherwise the land would become desolate and wild animals would multiply against you. 30 Little by little I will drive them out ahead of you, until you become fruitful and possess the land.…

God took the land away from the Neanderthal and gave it to what became the Hebrew people. The transition had to be gradual to keep the biodiverse ecology in balance. 

The literal verse is talking about the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites. There is a reason why transition takes place over time. 

You are most likely getting Chapter one confused with the rest of the Book of Genesis. A common mistake.

Jesus tells us that angels do not marry: "  In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven. Matthew 22:30

Genesis 6:2 "the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose".

The other interpretation of this is that the sons of Adam married with the gentiles, which is forbidden. Even Cain was worried about these people: "Anyone who finds me will kill me!" Genesis 4:14

The disciples were very surprised when the gentiles started to get saved. Jesus never really told them about that. He referred to them as "dogs". Matthew 15 "26But Jesus replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” 27“Yes, Lord,” she said, “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

This intermarriage was the reason for Noah's flood.

Neanderthals are not only human; they might be our own species of human.   Genetically, they are close enough to be considered a race of H. sapiens.    But they wouldn't be the "giants" of scripture.   While they were very strong, they were not as tall as the average anatomically modern human.

There was at least one other human species as tall as our own, but Neanderthals were not.   I think the males averaged bout 170 cm, maybe 5 feet 6 inches.

Precisely. In context it is referring to the heavenly angels who remain faithful and did not rebel. They are innumerable, eternal, and have no need to pro-create. It does not say they cannot, and they can and do appear in human form speaking, eating, drinking, etc. What one single angel can do is mind boggling and they are not limited to our physics and 3D world.

I would only say in reply that we may not be able to refer to angels as 'eternal' as they are created beings. What is made can be unmade.
