Music, so long as not created for the purpose of sin, inherently brings glory to God.

There ya go

How do you determine for definite if it was created for the purpose of sin or not though?

The style or the song itself? No style is created solely for evil, however certain songs, if done in worship to another god...would be questionable.

Like Led Zep singing about the "Pied Piper" ans what not, hence the reason I dont listen to that stuff any more.

I was raised on classical music and like to play it as well. Some of my favorite composers are Beethoven, Debussy, Bach...

I like much or most classical music. Chopan is one of my fav's. The piano and violin are the two musical instruments that I have a passion for. I was blessed to hear musicians in Russia play the most heavenly music on their violins when I visited there. I often pray the Lord will lead such wonderful talented people to minister in music to His glory.

If I hear something that I do not like I simply turn it off.

I absolutely adore classical music and this thread has come about just from a post I just did in another forum about cutting back on the things of this world and spending more time with our Lord.

I know some of this music is deeply rooted in occult teaching ie. Wagner's "Des Ring Der Nebelungen" and some of Mozart's darker stuff just before he died, and this side of classical music I avoid, but some of it is so beautiful and uplifting that I cannot listen to it without thinking about our Lord in absolute worship and thinking that ultimately this came from Him through the work of a man on Earth eg Beethoven 9th Symphony nearly always gives me this feeling of wanting to spring to my feet and cry out to Him!!

So my question is 2 fold, are you a fan of this type of music, and do you think its in any way subversive or soul destroying to listen to? I always pray for guidance, and have had my prayers very clearly answered at times on this very subject when on listening to some of the stuff I used to listen to before I was saved eg. Led Zep, I actually became nausious and knew it wasnt right, but with classical music Ive never had such feelings, and as such to tend think its ok once, as with everything, it doesnt take a hold of me and become and obsession and ultimately lead me away from God. I will never allow that to happen, with anything.

Any thoughts?

WOW i had no idea any of it was "occultist" or anything like that, you learn something new everyday.

I personally dont mind classical music and have a few cds ill chuck on time to time with no conviction whatsoever. The Holy Spirit helped me filter out my cd collection, and the classical ones are still there so id say there okay.

I love the classics. I'll listen to about anything instrumental as long as it is pleasing to the ear.

I like some classical music- particualarly the kind that almost sounds like something is happening... I like Back's Invention No. 8- but that's mainly because I learned to play it on the piano.... still have it memorized... :-)

As to the comment that it matters what music was intended for when created, I half-way agree. One point I would like to add to that, is that as Paul wrote; some people preached the gospel to spite it; others to glorify God- yet as Paul said, "Yet I will praise God...for whatever motive, the Gospel is still preached." (sorry if that's not right... I'm going from memory here- I understand the gist of it, though... :) ) I think it is sometimes the same with music; Regardless of how the original author felt when he wrote something, it does not change what the music is today.

I would also caution yourselves to be sure that what you like and dislike lines up with what God says- such as not condemning music that others listen to, if your reasoning really boils down to a preference. This is something that I had to do recently. I finally asked myself: "What message does this music have? Is it effective at conveying this message? Is it a good, Christ-pleasing message?" If the answers to these questions is yes- then I cannot condemn the music- regardless of how little I may like it.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
