There are only seven passages in the NT where being Baptized in the Holy Spirit is disussed:

The first four are quotes from John the Baptise who predicts that Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:33)

It is nearly impossible to draw any conclusions as to the nature of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit from these passages.

The next 2 refer to events at pentecost:

"for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

Acts 1:5 HCSB

Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

Acts 11:16 HCSB

The only other direct reference is 1 Corinthians 12:13

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-- whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free-- and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:13 HCSB

This passage seems to indicate that the Spirit is the element in which we were baptized, and as a result we became part of the body of Christ. The implication is that all believers are Baptized by the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation.

It is true that this happened to the disciples at a later point, but this is because the Spirit was not sent until after Jesus was crucified. Pentecost was a transitional period from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant, so we would expect some unique situations in the book of Acts. That is why it is dangerous to make doctrine from historical narrative.

And what about this verse? Acts 19:6 ---> And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

it says that when they were baptized (so they already accepted the Lord) Paul layed hands upon them and than they recieved the Holy Spirit...

So after they were saved they recieved the Holy Spirit...

I'll just quote my earlier post in answer to your question...

The Holy Spirit comes in at salvation, and is your constant companion from that moment on. But there is also a point in time, whether at that moment or later, where you need to yield to Him and He will baptize you with His power and fullness, where He gives you gifts and empowers you to do what He calls you to do.

All the Christians in the New Testament came to that. We have Him at salvation and we need to seek His baptism also.

You're going to get a really large variety of responses here. Here's my opinion on the matter, however:

Every true believer in Chist receives the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Actually the entire Triune God) the moment they believe into and call upon the name of Jesus Christ. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a matter of being clothed with God's authority to carry out His purpose on the earth. My personal conviction is that the event described in the New Testament, on the day of Pentecost, was specifically for the inception of the church life in the first century and is not an experience that is required in the church today. Nevertheless, the experience which many Christians claim to have had, described as being baptized in the Holy Spirit, is not a requirement of salvation, nor it is an authentication of genuine salvation.

Amen, I couldn't said it better.

Many ppl think if they are baptised with the Holy Spirit and receive gifts, that it is proof of salvation, but it is not. We need to ask the Holy Spirit to fill us each day afresh for the day, to walk in His light, to be a light for the world and to keep us from hurting others. That's just a few things. Our cup runs dry quickly if we don't have a relationship with God through His word and prayer life, so we need the infilling of the Holy Spirit on a daily basis. You don't have to experience any thing, to know you have been baptized.

Amen...the gifts are just a plus...but not everyone speaks in tongues...not everyone prophesies...etc...Apostle Paul even said that in 1 Corinthians...I will add to this that we all have gifts, just some may be different than others...I have been to churches where they said you have to speak in tongues to be saved...I don't believe that for a minute...however I love my prayer language...if you want a gift, I think all you have to do is ask for it and God will give it to you. I think I am straying away from the question though...so i will stop..that was just my input

Hey everyone,

There's an awesome testimony on the 700 Club today 4/12 concerning a woman minister with a gift of healing who has seen the Lord raise someone from the dead through her ministry. If you get a chance to watch it please do. You can also see it at www.cbn.com.

Blessings,

Sherman

Look carefully at what Thyssia is looking for: she wanted help in a time of trouble. Baptism is not something you do to get a magical power. (Although it sometimes feels that way) Baptism is an outward sign of an inner commitment, and He can come to you without any emotional upheaval. If you asked Him to come, He surely has already. Getting back to your troubles, the strength that comes from assurance is what you need to help you through hard times. What can man, or the world, do to me that I will not overcome? God will provide for you.

I say this because many people look at faith or God or religion as a divine vending machine. And if you don't have enough faith we don't get what we desire. That is false. God never promised us an easy life, in fact He said that we are sure to undergo persecution for His sake and the sake of the Kingdom. Post your struggle and we can help you, or PM me or someone else and we can give you biblical counsel.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is indeed a sign of a believer, of salvation, for it is only for those who know Christ.

Shalom Thysia,

I agree, we are talking about 2 different things here,

#1 you are having struggles in your walk

#2 you want to know about the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit will not make your problems go away, so this is the area where I would encourage you to focus first.

Secondly, ask the L-rd to show you the truth concerning the baptism of the Holy Spirit as you read His Word.

Hey!

Look what The Spirit was doing in 1674

Boys will be boys but God has Mercy and Grace

As timely today as when first penned

These words bring tears of joy and hope to my soul.

What an amazing song to sing at first rising.

AWAKE, MY SOUL, AND WITH THE SUN

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
