Judging others

Seems like good advise and much needed these days.

We can have discernment without judgment.  A little grace goes a long way.     

Matthew 7:1-2

7 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

Luke 6:37-38

37 “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

The blatant phenomenon in this christian neighbourhood is people judging others with their curses n provoke others.

If Jesus meant that we should not judge or discern another person's actions at all. Zero, zip, nada; then these scriptures elsewhere would be in contradiction so to speak.

Matthew 18:15

 “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you”.

Galatians 6:1

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

2 Thessalonians 3:14-15

Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer

1 Corinthians 5:11

But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

Titus 3:9-11

But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them.  You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.

James 5:19

 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back,  remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

There is a right and wrong reason to bring correction to another person. There is also a right and wrong way to approach someone concerning a fault. How and when we approach someone concerning sin can be perceived as condemnation or constructive criticism. We need not call out every faction, but pray for wisdom before making rash judgments or assumptions about others. For example, overlooking minor faults such as name-calling, or insults is an act of grace and modeling the mercy and patience that we ourselves have received from God.

It is good to weight these thoughts first before calling out another. Are you doing so to help them grow in their walk and keep them out of sin, or is it to make you feel superior because you think you’re better? We need to be careful how we weigh these out, because we can also dole out false love and humility

Bob Utley on his site offers these following guide lines :

1. believers are admonished not to judge one another (cf. Matt. 7:1-5; Luke 6:37,42; Rom. 2:1-11; James 4:11-12)

2. believers are admonished to evaluate leaders (cf. Matt. 7:6,15-16; 1 Cor. 14:29; 1 Thess. 5:21; 1 Tim. 3:1-13; and 1 John 4:1-6)

Some criteria for proper evaluation may be helpful.

1. evaluation should be for the purpose of affirmation (cf. 1 John 4:1 – "test" with a view toward approval)

2. evaluation should be done in humility and gentleness (cf. Gal. 6:1)

3. evaluation must not focus on personal preference issues (cf. Rom. 14:1-23; 1 Cor. 8:1-13; 10:23-33)

4. evaluation should identify those leaders who have "no handle for criticism" from within the church or the community (cf. 1 Timothy 3)."(Utley.

It helps when you realize that you are judging an action, not the person.  Pointing out that an action is wrong is not judging the person, but an action - there is a difference.

But then, if you don't judge murderers and send them to prison, they are free to murder some more. I think the Lord is telling us that if we judge, we will be judged; therefore, don't judge unless it is necessary.

"Judge not, that ye be not judged" is not simply an admonishment against judging others. It's also a warning against self-judgment.

How often are we self-critical? All the time! We constantly compare ourselves to others and find ourselves lacking here or abundant there. As we compare ourselves to others we shuffle society into subtle hierarchies that bind our fates in invisible ways by perpetuating a slew of behaviors without us even knowing.

The Bible tells us we are not to judge hypocritically. First take a good long look at yourself. Have you ever done what you are criticizing this person for?

John 8:7

So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
