Computers can be hacked. They can have food and drinks spilt on them, they can be destroyed by lightening, they can get viruses. I don't trust computers and still fight with my pads. Spell correct inserts words i never said. I would much rather argue with a person. They say that computer error is in reality operator error. Hogwash! How about programmer error? Bill Gates should know. His company put out a whole lot of programs that were faulty. Don't trust dem new fangled gadgets.

Planes do most of thier flying by computer now.....   it's only the take off and landings that people really do.

Question is will computers make less mistakes than humans......

I'd be OK with the totally computer operated plane, but with a Pilot and co pilot on the flight deck just in case. Though I think in some ways that would defeat the purpose and not bring savings to the customer.

I can not see the airlines hiring a pilot and co-pilot to just sit around.Would it bring savings to the passengers to have a computer operated plane?

This is currently how commercial airplanes are flown. After take off and landing it turns to autopilot, and the plane just direct itself to pre-set flight destination.  Computers are good at doing repetitive tasks well, it is only when unforeseen variables and circumstances/malfunction pop-up you would need the judgement of a human to solve.

Pilot on commercial airliners pretty much just watch the plane fly itself, and only do manual operation if there is a problem, this isn't like driving where you have to keep hands on the steering wheel.

well, assuming the computer doesnt turn into a sociopathic killer on their own, do these people not remember that computers can be hacked. . .

yeah, that's my issue with it.  Hackers.

A computerized plane that is absent a pilot is not only a disaster just waiting to happen, it is putting pilots out of work.
