No, what you're trying to do is bind the poor woman in chains that the Lord never intended. The Greek word used for "fornication" here is porneia , defined as " fornication, whoredom; met: idolatry", which comes from the Greek word pernaō, "to sell off".  In that vein, they have "sold off" their responsibility to their spouse in favor of something else that has now captured their heart and controls their emotional life and dominates their behavior.

Promiscuity does not have to be in a merely physical arena; one giving their passions to anger, manipulation, spite, vengefulness, envy, control, or whatever emotion or desire. Essentially, they have placed something else between themselves and their marriage, which is a promise made not only to their spouse, but to God as well. Be this their temper, sexual appetites, abusive behavior on either the physical, verbal or emotional levels, they have broken their promise to both God and their spouse, and have abandoned the sacred promise they made to both.

This is why Cobalt is correct:

Please dont claim to speak for what the saviour intended when it contradicts way he directly said. i honestly hate when people distort simple straightforward bible principles  to match their  preheld opinions. its like how people who want to accept homosexuality claim it only refers to male prostitutes.

A simple check  if the word porneia shows that while different group have broader or narrower  definitions,  ALL agree that pornea refers to sexually  based activities not involving the spouse.

By including stuff like anger  envy control etc.you are again stretching  the scripture to fit what you want  it to.

using your logic, a person could get divorced and remarry for practically ANYTHING and claim -They were  fornicating by the Greek definition.

I am new in reading the Bible, and last night I read this passage that made me close the book and start crying.  In Matthew 5:32, Jesus denounces divorce, stating that any man who divorces his wife other than for adultery, has caused her to become and adulteress.  I got divorced after 12 years for reasons other than adultery.  I'm discouraged in reading this, because it basically means that I will never be honored with another relationship blessed by God, even if it is with a Godly man, because I have become an adulteress through my divorce.  I am only 32 and this is extremely depressing.  Any thoughts or words of encouragement on this?

Hi, Please don't be dismayed! There is much in God's reveal of Jesus, the Bible, that brings us face to face with some hard things to face. But the Bible also provides us our escape. God is generous, loving, merciful, as well as just.

You will find if you haven't already that Paul states it is best if we can be like him, and never marry, for if married we have two masters, God and our spouse. Does that mean none of us should ever have married? No it doesn't.

It takes time to absorb the guidance within God's word, just know that Jesus is God, He has made it possible for each of us to be with Him eternally, and remember especially that God is not a trickster. He does not set traps for us.

He via the Holy Spirit will break each us emotionally, for each of us will come to see things we have done that we would rather no one have seen nor known, but that is good for us too.   Enjoy the journey, it is grand really grand, praise God.

And it may be that you will remarry, or it may be that you won't. Gee, I remarried at age 73, who'd have thunk that one? My bride was divorced, she is a lovely gift to me from God.

I think of the Life of Jesus:
He laid aside being God an became 100% man, which He thought was nothing to regard, and was spit upon, laughed at, beaten beyond recognition, subjected to the cruelest death possible yet He asked The Father to forgive man of this and all sin. Which The Father then placed the sin of the world upon His Son and turned His Face from His Son because
Hab 1:13a
13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil,
And cannot look on wickedness.

NKJV
Now I will let you return to your lament of what you might have to suffer for Him... Love, Steven

Allow me if you all will to add a personal thought.

When God stepped up the responsibilities of man at the sermon on the mount, He stated that  if man even thinks a sin he has committed that sin. Oops! Is there any sin then that many if not all have not  committed? What of me? Have I not murdered someone in my heart and mind? Have I not romped with many a woman in my mind and heart? Have I not  envied what others have that I do not have? Yikes, I have done it all.

 - from Matthew 19 sermon on the Mount account:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.-Reading that  I will have to confess that I don't have enough eyes to tear out to cover the thought of a sin  especially  a sexual sin and still see anything. I suspect that if it were a literal admonition and command all of us would have white canes with red tips, and all we would hear all day longis tap tap taping of blind man's canes."

So it seems there must be escape from my sin or else I am foolish to revel in my salvation and might as well just live for the day's follies as they come my way.

Fortunately there is escape! That escape is Jesus. He has borne the shame of my sin, all my sin, past, present, and future. He has fully paid the price of my sin which is death. Jesus died for me and has provided my redemption, He has atoned for my weaknesses.  I am saved by Him alone, and not of any merit of my own.

Praise the righteous God for He has reconciled the impossible. He has made the blemished white as snow, and He has called many to be with him for eternity.

re-read that and see if it's making  any sense.  Hint- it doesn't. That sounds more like an excuse people give give disregard any part of the bible  they don't like.

2 Timothy 3.16- all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is good for reproof correction instruction  in righteousness. That verse regardless  if how long it took to be recorded  was given by Jesus to answer a specific question  about a specific issue -divorce. it's  not to be disregarded or claim itvwas for the jews only. never have have ever heard that any  of jesus' sayings were no longer applicable to people. its not like the ot law that has passed.

I was divorced in 1997 after 20 years of marriage. I've now been in my second marriage for 20 years. It has been not only 20 years of bliss beyond anything I imagined, but it has involved two miraculous healings.

I've re-read those scriptures a LOT, within the context of the personality of God as revealed in the bible as well as the context of the situation in which the words were penned.

Hello Jen77.

You are not alone in reading a passage and realizing that you have done something God says is sinful.  We have all done wrong (Rom. 3:23).  Your honest response to scripture is how the Spirit of God convicts us of our failures (John 16:8) through His word (v 13).  Like those who Peter preached to in Acts 2, you have been pricked in your heart (Acts 2:37).

Sin is a grievous thing. It is a burden that we, alone, cannot bear.  We cannot stand before God in our sins.  Sadly, many prefer to dull their conscience (Heb. 3:15) instead of seeking the actual, painful, remedy which involves repentance and correction where possible (Acts 2:38; 26:20 "fruit worthy of repentance").

God is amazingly generous & gracious.  Not one of us deserves His mercy.  He provided forgiveness at a terrible, excruciating cost... His own Son's death.  Please, know that God loves you.

If we seek Him with the honesty you have expressed, we will find Him (Deut. 4:29).  But, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear:" (Psalm 66:18).

When we are convicted by His word, it is a (painful) blessing.  It is an opportunity for us to change for the better in His sight.

May the Lord bless you & keep you.

Adultery came only happen outside of marriage .  And a man is just as capable of it as a woman .

I think there must be more to this particular instance ?

Why is Jesus not cautioning the man about adultery ?

Certainly if the man divorces his wife  to carry on with a girlfriend he is an adulterer as well .

I think that maybe what Jesus is saying is that even though they could both end up being guilty of adultery after the divorce , his sin will be greater because  he is the one  nullifying what God sanctioned ?

Thank you for all your advice, but I'm now more confused than ever.  Still Alive says there is a chance at forgiveness from my past circumstances, but CreativeMechanic says not so?  I appreciate you all trying to help.

If you believe the Gospel, you're saved. All sin is forgiven. Move forward in Jesus.  Jesus was talking to Jews period.

Marriage is a gift from God, and same for being single.  As a never-been-married man who wants to be married, it's hard to stomach, but Paul explains well in 1 Corinthians 7 about the benefits of both circumstances.  From reading your quoted verse, it seems that you're not an adulteress through your divorce if no one subsequently marries you, but I'll let others who have a better understanding that me can help you more on this.  But what I'd say is that God still loves and treasures you, and He has a great plan for you moving forward.  Have you try asking Jesus about this directly?  Regardless of whether you can or will remarry in this life, Jesus is your eternal Beloved and Husband.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
