God does not leave His word up for us to speculate, God tells us exactly what He means -

`Babylon the Great...... and the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.` (Rev. 17: 5 & 18)

The ancient and new city of Babylon is being rebuilt by the USA and the UN. It will be the capital of the world`s final Gentile Global Government, and will house the religious and economic centres of the world.

No, you missed it by a mile! It is MYSTERY Jerusalem that John is talking about. He TELLS us this is the "great city." 

The old city will amount to nothing. The Beast and False Prophet are going to JERUSALEM!  Read 11:1-2: it is the man of sin entering Jerusalem with Muslim...I mean Gentile armies. Would the REAL Messiah set down in Babylon - the old City? Not on a bet! He is going to touch down in JERUSALEM! Why then would you imagine the one coming in His place would go somewhere else?

Yes the beastly leader and the Political machine will eventually go to the `glorious land,` however previous to that they will set up the Global Government in Babylon. When God deals with the city and its evil in one quick judgment, it is then that they go over to Jerusalem. (Dan. 11: 41  & Rev. 18: 10)

`Alas, alas, that great city BABYLON, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.` (Rev. 18: 10)

God is quite clear as to what city He is referring to.

Sorry, but that verse is speaking of Jerusalem. You have to look at the entire context.

The "woman" in question, seen riding the Beast, full of blasphemies, is a CITY, but it is not that old physical city of Babylon! John called it that "great city." And IN THE SAME BOOK tells us that "great city" is Jerusalem. 

WHERE is the Beast going to be when He deceives the world? He will be in Jerusalem. That is why God calls that great city MYSTERY babylon." She is ACTING like the old city of Babylon, with false religion.

Perhaps "forever" does not always mean what we think it means.  How could smoke from ANY city rise up forever when the earth will be destroyed and we will get a NEW heaven and earth?
