No.

Scripture reveals (a) the baptism with the Holy Spirit (which is in fact the outpouring or gift of the Holy Spirit to those who believe) and (b) the baptism by the Holy Spirit (where the Holy Spirit immerses the believer into the Body of Christ).

To be filled with the Spirit is to be totally controlled by the Holy Spirit, and the evidence is boldness in witness (which included speaking in tongues by the apostles and disciples in Acts 2) as well as exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit.

The baptism with "fire" is metaphorical for being immersed into intense suffering, even to the point of death (as in the case of Christ and the apostles).  If you seek the baptism of fire, this is what you should expect:

But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: (Mark 10:38,39).

This is an excellent answer
It also coincides with this verse
1 Pe 1:7
7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth,
though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the
appearing of Jesus Christ:
KJV

Notice the gold perishes 1st creation passes away but that which is refined in the furnace by God The Holy Spirit
endures forever as a treasure unto The Lord...  Love, Steven

In my experience they are the same and a Baptism of Fire means going through the Fire..tests, etc.

Clearly, opinions vary. This the phrase "baptism of the Holy Spirit" does not exactly exist in the Bible, I guess you are free to make up your own definition.

Like I said, opinions vary.

Mine is this.

The elect, the chosen, are drawn by the Holy Spirit, and they are allowed to see, hear, understand, and believe In Jesus. This is part of the new birth, the being born from above. These people are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and will confess and believe in their hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead. This is the condition of all true believers in Christ.

Subsequent to that, God may empower them when the Holy Spirit come upon them for a purpose, this is in addition to the Spirit taking up residence in the beleiver. The purpose is to empower them for acts of service, could be one of the mentioned gifts of the Spirit, perhaps there are some gifts He gives, which are not named. The purpose of this gifting will be to edify (build up) the church, witness for Christ, acts of service, etc. This is frequently accompanied in the Bible (adjacent to terms like "filled with the Spirit" with boldness.

No single gift is specified as being the only sign that has accompanied this filling, nor is it stated, that empowerment for service will necessarily be visible to others. Not every function of gifting, necessarily requires gifting. For example, God may gift people in hospitality, teaching, evangelism, but, these things may be done apart from being specifically gifted.

The Bible possibly implies, that every believer has at least one gift, but there is wiggle room in that understanding. (1 Cor 7:7)

Gifts are not something we chose, they are given by God as He chooses. (1 Cir 12:11)

Many people believe that the so called sign gifts, have died out, and are no longer with us. Usually this is based on sloppy exegesis of 1 Cor 8-13. Not surprisingly, people who believe the gifts are over, typically do not exhibit any. Those who do exhibit them, have a difficult time denying their existence, go figure!

I avoid the use of the term baptism of the Holy Spirit but will use terms like filling, gifting etc, to describe things in terms that the Bible does. it is a much easier discussion, when people define their terms first.

I do not worry much about terminology, I am just willing to have God give me what He wants to give me, and not give me what He chooses not to. He knows better than I, but even there, I would rather not have any special gifting, if it were to make be feel and act superior, or make others feel inferior. Some people focus on the gifts, and lose sight of the primacy of the giver, may that never happen to us. In my opinion, the worst thing that a person does that is related to the subject, is when he or she wounds a brother or sister in Christ, by saying unless they speak in tongues, they are not saved. if anyone does that, it is to their shame and not to God's glory, in my opinion.

Well, all I know is that John came baptising with water, but said One is coming who would baptise with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

I am truly sorry that I seemed to cause such an offense by trying to seek out some answers here.  Forgive me.  Feel free to discuss as you wish or leave the thread, I shall leave you all to it.

God bless you.

Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit. Yet something more happened at his baptism.

Foolish men, as I was, get some new insight and think they now know everything about that thing.  I had become puffed up in my imagination.  I needed ego deflation.  Pride had me.  But even a fool like me has room to grow and learn.  I am here to testify that Jesus indeed baptizes with both the Holy Spirit and Fire.

Not all men are given the same measure of the Spirit and all can have their measure increased.  The Holy Spirit and the gifts are given to profit others.  Set your heart to seek all you can get and then use everything your given to benefit those around you.  Peace.

Is it the same as being filled with the Holy Spirit?  I was prayed for to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and I was, and I speak in tongues, but in recent years I have heard more and more about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire, which some say is different, and some think is the same as being filled with the Holy Spirit.  If I have not yet received His baptism of fire, I sure want it! You'd think I would know, but when I was prayed for to be filled it was a gentle, yet rewarding instance, and I pray to be continually filled with Him, which He is faithful to do.  I know we are not supposed to go by feeling, but I simply seek to understand what these two happenings are.

A dear brother in Christ pointed out to me, that if we look at both events in terms of language alone, it is possible to immerse someone in water, without the water filling them up on the inside.  Is it so with the Holy Spirit, though, in terms of His baptism?

Tell me what you think, or know:  are the two things the same, or not? I am praying for the answer, but let me know what understanding God leads you to also.  Let's search Him out together, Amen? :)

I don't know if I have the vocabulary to say what I want to about this, but I will try. God appeared to Moses in a burning bush. On the day on Pentecost the Holy Spirit appeared to sit on the Apostles as Fire. The bible says God is a Consuming fire. The eyes of Christ in the book of revelation is as Fire in one place if I am not mistaken.  Not one of these examples of Fire in the bible is talking about trails but God himself.  Remember, contrary to popular opinion, The work of the Holy Spirit in us being made right with God ( salvation ) is completely different from the Holy Spirit's work in empowering us for service. Also there is a difference between filling something and baptizing something. I hope this helps. God bless you.

We receive the Holy Spirit the moment we are saved... no more ..no less there is nothing more need be done or requested to be done to have it.  Baptism by water is not a requirement of salvation or the "amount" of Holy Spirit we receive. Baptism is an command of public confession of belonging to Christ. When John the Baptist said "Baptism and Fire" he was referring to fire as judgement ... not an extra special level of being holy/more spirit/ higher level than someone else. I am sure this post will not end this discussion and am sure more will follow, but... I am sure that if you search the scripture and not narrow line parts of verses you will find what I said to be true.

God Bless you in your studies,

Hip

We do receive the Holy Spirit at the rebirth, But there is a second blessing called the "Baptism in the Holy Ghost", Matt 3: 11.  Acts 1: 4--5. This is a separate experience to the rebirth.

The disciples in Acts 8: 14--17, were saved and baptised in water, but they hadn't been baptised in the Holy Ghost until the Apostles laid hands on them, V17.

Paul was saved three days before he was baptised in the Holy Ghost, Acts 9: 6--17. And the disciples in Acts 19: 2--6, were saved, but not baptised in the Holy Ghost, until Paul laid his hands on them. v6.

The Holy Spirit is of ruach. Fire is of neshamah. They are different. Won't say nothing more about it, things would just get testy.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
