It is more a type than a place, but at times seems to be centered geographically. It is a MYSTERY...

A little like its archetype, Zion. Zion is where Yahweh reigns, and it might move location or localisation's description somewhat as well.

"Mystery Babylon" is the mother of harlots and the abominations of the earth.  It is a reference to the influence of Satan's kingdom in the natural realm.  Satan's kingdom gave birth to all unfaithfulness and abominations on earth.  When a population center becomes so influenced by spiritual wickedness, it's allegorically referred to as Babylon.

• And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints and of all who have been slain on the earth.”  Revelation 18:24

The blood of all who've been slain, righteous and unrighteous, is found in her.  This shouldn't be confused with being guilty of shedding righteous blood.  It's much broader in scope than that.

Mystery Babylon started when Satan caused Adam and Eve to be unfaithful and will end when Jesus returns to destroy Satan's kingdom, the ultimate regime change.

The standard interpretation of the Reformers, which still stands, is that the woman is the Roman Catholic Church. She became a harlot/prostitute when she prostituted her religious authority with the political authority of the Roman Empire. The Church fornicated with the State.

In Revelation, a woman represents a religious body, of which there are two types in Christianity: the Virgin Bride of Christ, and the Great Whore of worldliness. The Roman Catholic Church was the mother of all churches that became fallen and corrupted by prostituting themselves with the world. Her harlot daughters are all those churches who followed in her footsteps.

Give Ezekiel 16 a read, there is no mystery.  Also, I would add, the RCC did not exist when the church began.

Actually, Wingnut, WilliamL's answer comes the closest to the truth in my opinion.

Jerusalem became a spiritual whore in God's eyes (Ezekiel 16), just as a unified Christian denominational movement led by Catholicism will become a spiritual whore in His eyes during the end-times.

That she will lead any movement that unifies the Christian denominational world is only logical, as she is the largest, and this is why she will be called "the Mother of the harlots, and the abominations of the earth." The argument that the Catholic Church did not exist when this prophecy was spoken and therefore cannot be its fulfillment supposes that the Lord does not prophecy well beyond the times in which the prophecy itself is delivered, but we know that not to be the case. Most end-time prophecies have not yet come to fulfillment.
