Speaking in tongues is that ,real or alive today ?

I have been a Christian a very long time over thirty years, but never heard anyone speak in tongues,

and many well known Christians say it is still current in todays world, and I know they say you need a interpreter ,if you do speak it.

but the question is ?, does  speaking in tongues really exist ,?or was it  a actual language that was spoke in long ago at Pentecost in native form for all the different people,to understand in there own,the word of God so they could tell there people  and share the gospel?

does anyone here at worthy speak in tongues,? where does it come from ,and what is its purpose,?

I don't know anything about it ,but what I read in the bible,  and yes, this is a legit question ?

If it is genuine and of the Holy Spirit and it is still for today. However, I have heard of some who "practice" speaking in tongues...that is not of God. When we accept Jesus as our Lord we are filled or indwelled by the Holy Spirit and do not all speak in tongues...that is one of the "gift"  when we become Christians.

I do not believe that speaking in tongues is for today.This is from 1 Corinthians 13:8.There is no evidence that Jesus ever spoke in tongues.

In 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 it is also referred to as praying in the Spirit.  It is often practiced privately because in verses 18 and 19 Paul says that it is not profitable in church without and interpretation.  It is also referred to as the least of the gifts. Yet in vs. 18 he thanks God that he speaks in tongues more than you all.   So it does have value in that it edifies oneself, encouraging ones own faith by speaking to God in verses 2 & 4.  We are told that when we don't know how to pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in Romans 8.  And we are also told to pray at all times in the Spirit in Jude 20, and in Ephesians 6:18 where supplication in the Spirit is also mentioned.  But in all these cases the prayers in tongues or in the Spirit are directed toward God and not toward men.

Of course Jesus didn't speak in tongues, that is evidence of the Holy Spirit and since God is all three in one why would He.  I believe that speaking in tongues is for today.  If God does not change then neither does His Word.  I believe it is to be used in prayer that is between you and God.  But it does say that in the Bible that if it is done in public that there has to be an interpretation,  if there isn't then it is out of order.

1 Cor. 13:10  says when the PERFECT comes that which is in part will be done away.  So I don't believe they will cease till we are in heaven or else when Jesus comes back.  But 13:8 is used to deny the reality of its existance today.  I believe it is out of context.

In ACTS,  everyone listening to the message heard the message in their own tongue.

TODAY, as always, of those seeking Yahweh in Truth,   everyone JESUS speaks to understands Him clearly,  He doesn't stutter nor speak unclearly - He never did.  It is written that those who were not immersed, in the bible ((NT Gospels)), did not  accept Him as Messiah, even though He always told them the Truth clearly and plainly from the Father and from His Word.

He even speaks perfect mandarin chinese language, whenever He wants to.

I agree with you on this Jeff.The truth is always spoken plainly for everyone to understand and hear.

Like everything else, practically?,   there's a little of the Truth and a lot of the untruth out there, practiced every day on the tv shows and such....  ((churches on tv))... 

In 50 years plus I've seen or heard of praying in tongues, or prophesy in tongues, edifying 3 times out of hundreds of times in services.    The 3 times were simple, plain, and clearly

understood by someone there.  The other times were shows of confusion, disorder, and in services not even seeking Yahweh nor His Word.      

One of the 3 times was a missionary to mexico speaking the Gospel of Jesus to a large crowd of mexican religion ((over 20; under 500)).   The missionary spoke in english, his only known language.   The people present told him afterwards that they heard him in their own language while he was speaking english.

Another time was reported by Nora Lam (("China Cry" or "For Those Tears I died", I think))...

She was in California in a prayer time with others,  and someone prayed/ prophesied in perfect mandarin chinese language the cities that Yahweh had already told her He wanted her to go back to for the Gospel's Sake for the people there.   Nora resisted going, didn't want to go back to such a horrible godless country. 

After the message in tongues, she wept and knew she would go ((she did obey Yahweh and went, with many miracles occurring following the Gospel Message)).

In the Prayer Meeting,  only Nora Lam knew the chinese language, no one else did - the one delivering the message had no idea what they said, and no one else knew of her struggle with Yahweh about going back to china, nor of the cities He had told her to go to.   

The 3rd time,   someone was prayed for , prayed over in a heavenly language, and was visibly and instantly healed and with a huge joy and smile and peace radiating on his face -  he was soon immersed in Jesus' Name,  and within a few days of being immersed he went to be with the Lord ((he died)) peacefully.

     God Bless you,you seem to ask a lot of very good questions,,,,,,,,I think this is one of those questions that you are truly going to have to go to the Word of God & pray the Holy Spirit give you the Understanding that you seek because you are going to get many different answers from "people",,,,,,,,many,,,,

     I believe Willa has answered most accurately & she has given you a good Scripture reference from 1 Corinthians,,,,,the Word of God does not just show us "speaking in tongues" as only one thing,,,,,,,there are actually 3 I have found,,,,there is "tongues" that were the native language of some unbelievers ,they were spoken by those that did not speak that language until the Holy Spirit emPowered them to do so,,,,Miraculously(works & wonders!!!!!).......there was/is the language of angels that no one can understand except someone(present) that is given the interpretation & then there is the language(in spirit )you are given to pray between you & God

     Do I believe this is for today,,,,yes,I do but I do believe most of what we see & hear is counterfeit,imposters,,,,,,,you & I and every Spirit Filled believer must pray discernment over these things,,,,,,,,,we must ask for God to reveal the fakes from the real deal and always look that everything that is being done is done decently & in order and in accordance with His Word,,,,,,,,,,,

     A person can be persuaded to speak"jibberish" by everyones influence & they are deceiving themselves,,,,,,,.,God is never out of order,,,,,,,,,,I have been to church when people speak(in turn),someone interprets or they pray (in spirit) without making a fuss & screaming & so on,,,,,,,,God does not "possess" people that they are taken over & cannot control themselves,,,,,,,,,,,,even His Word says "What would the unbeliever think?",,,,,,,,,
