The Bible tells us to sing to the Lord. I suppose it could be debated how much time should be devoted to that.

Yes they sang. In one of the epistles we are told what a worship service should be and it includes singing of psalms.

It is a worship service. Worship includes singing praise to the Lord.

Perhaps you should be asking yourself what is the purpose of a church service and how should we accomplish that purpose.

I think it safe to say the NT-era Church sang. As to why we sing "so many minutes," I am inclined to ask why we sing so few. Are you aware the routine sermon as we understand it today was non-existent in the NT era? There were no church buildings, and when Christians gathered there was no stage, not podium or pulpit, and no routine sermon! Those were all later additions. Sing more; sermon less if the NT era ekklesia are to be emulated.  

Amen brother! Church buildings came later. There was far more intimacy in the house churches and it was freer in the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14). 

The Moravians tried to revive it, creating Hern Hutts (house churches). They had 100yrs of non stop 24hr prayer. Can you imagine that?!

Hello Oscar,   Yes indeed, the first Christians sang to God. Although I will speculate that depending on the persecution going on, they might have sang softly. When I was first saved I asked these same questions. In my first church the words of the song were shown on the alter with an overhead projector and the entire congregation sang. Since I had been Catholic before this, singing in church seemed odd to me. But it is totally scriptural to do so and the best proof is in the Psalms (which are songs). Psalm 65:8 says "The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy." Then Psalm 69:30 says "I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving."  Many people in my early church even came in with tambourines and a few acoustical guitars. So they quoted to me Psalm 98:4 "Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music;" which justified the use of simple instruments. I know many churches have a choir and they make music good enough to be recorded, that's fine. But I've never been part of a better worship service than in my first church.
