what is the biblically correct response to a specific crime by spouse

This topic came up in our household based on the subway spokesman charges. Im curious what your responses are.

 

A spouse looks at inappropriate material (child porn) but does not engage in it with anyone. Only views it online. Obviously a crime and needs to be dealt with. What is a biblically correct response by the spouse? Is it acceptable biblically to divorce the spouse in this instance?

I would opine that is might well be Biblically allowable, just as divorce itself is Biblically allowable. That is to say that is might be within God's permissive will, but not was He desires. As you know, He allows some things because of the hardness of our hearts. I think things like love, healing, forgiveness, etc, are a higher calling.

When Jesus made allowance for divorce, He used the Greek word porniea (I think I spelled that right). Some of our translations make that out to be "fornication". but it is a broader term that fornication. Some translations use the word 'immorality', but that is way to broad, we are all immoral.

Sexual immorality is probably a good way to translate it, but even narrowing that down could be tough. What one person consider immoral, another considers normal. I feel safe in saying that whatever God has specifically allowed, is o.k. (read here hetero relations within marriage) and using the body as it was intended. Beyond that I feel like I would be going out on a limb, and no one should act in a way that is against their own conscience, but I do not think that means that you can divorce a person for doing something just because it would violate your conscience if you did it.

One thing I feel reasonably confident in saying, is that a person should not use it as an excuse to divorce, when the person was wanting to divorce and was just waiting for a chance to justify it. We usually say things like "for better and for worse, til death do we part".

Question: Did we mean it when we took a vow?

I think reporting the site would be first on the list to the authorities.  If a spouse is watching child porn I would think this person is perverted in their sexual desires and I would demand that counseling and seeking out help for this unnatural sexual desire be in order.  If the spouse would not go along with these immediate demands to seek out help then seperation would be the appropriate action until they do.   They are committing a crime and to seperate yourself from that crime is just a wise choice to keep yourself from being caught up in it by covering it up.  Somethings between spouses can be overlooked and can be worked out without seperating from one another but child porn is a crime as sexual assault on minor's is occuring at the time of the filming a child's life is being destroyed and to be sexually gratified at the destruction of a child is something one shouldn't have to put up with or keep it a secret.   I do not believe it is grounds for a divorce but seperation would be in order if help is not sought out immediately reconciliation can't be possible.

Looking at or possessing (having on your computer screen is possession) child porn is a Felony and the person who has it should be turned in. Period. There is no excuse, even a child knows that it is against the law. Unless, of course, the parents have kept them locked in a room their entire life. It is a sick disease, with no known cure. There is treatment, and control.

I'm going to agree with Rick Parker here. The possession or making of child pornography is a serious crime.  I believe I mentioned my former vet is serving 30 years for this and the charge WAS possession on his computers.  I would divorce a man who would be involved in this since staying with him and not reporting it would amount to complicity.  Sooner or later, such a person will move on to assaulting children.
