Has anyone heard about those craters in Russia. I saw it on my home page. What are they.

They are most curious and they look so clearly cut not like the craters in Florida or another place around the world.

they are saying that they are methane gas that has been trapped under the frozen tundra for God knows how long and global warming is causing the pressures to build from the permafrost melting and blowing the holes in the ground from the bottom up......

I don't personally believe one could get nature to carve a hole with such smooth sided....          It's just a guess on my part, but I'd say that someone is testing a new weapon from space.

They are doing oil drilling in that area. Perhaps fracking or something like that is affecting it? There are many lakes in that area too that you can see on google earth that are that shape.

Another explanation I heard of is pingos that collapse.

What are they?

I find this concept of pingos very intriguing--but I have always liked geology.
